Created to Create Focused on an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach, we cover a variety of media, including sculpture, painting and photography.

Mariana Custodio Art Gallery is heading to Contemporary Istanbul 2026 with a booth built around contrast — three artists, three very different visual languages, one carefully curated presentation.

Zahra Shahcheraghi brings abstract expressionism laced with figuration, paintings that move through womanhood, intimacy, and the body as a site of transformation, drawing on childhood imagination and personal memory. Her work has already traveled through Tehran, Istanbul, and London, and this new body of pieces continues that exploration in swirling, flesh-toned gestures.

Filipe Real Marinheiro, working out of Lisbon, turns to the physical life of urban space — its transformation, its degradation — through bold spray-painted gestures layered with paper collage. His pieces sit between spontaneity and careful study, leaving room for each viewer to bring their own reading to the surface.

And Jéssica Burrinha rounds out the presentation with sculpture: soil, clay, and cement worked into “living sculptures” that keep transforming and regenerating over time, a practice shown across Portugal, Spain, and Turkey and now held in private collections internationally.

Together the booth traces a throughline from painting to object, from the body to the built environment to raw material itself — different mediums and geographies in conversation. If you’re at the fair, come find us, meet the artists, and see the work up close.

Being trendy isn’t necessarily a weakness. Trends reflect the visual language, desires and anxieties of a particular moment—but the more interesting question is what happens when that moment passes.

Timeless art isn’t defined by being classical, nor is contemporary art automatically temporary. The distinction lies in whether a work simply reflects its time, or transforms its cultural language into something with a life beyond it.

From Place to Painting 🌍🎨

What happens when an artist looks at a real place — and turns it into something that exists beyond time?

Should your collection match your interior — or should it lead the room? ✨

What appears to stand in opposition can, in fact, belong together. Different materials. Different visual languages. Different ways of making. Yet in dialogue, these distinct practices reveal that contrast is not conflict—it is what gives transformation its shape.

For Contemporary Istanbul 2026, Mariana Custodio Art Gallery presents “Opposing, Not Opposite”, a three-artist exhibition featuring Zahra Shahcheraghi (Iran), Filipe Real Marinheiro (Portugal), and Jéssica Burrinha (Portugal).

Bringing together painting and sculpture, the exhibition explores transformation as a shared language across three seemingly opposite artistic approaches: Shahcheraghi’s colour-drenched figuration, Marinheiro’s raw-canvas erasures, and Burrinha’s living, earth-built sculptures. Rather than opposing one another, these practices reveal how difference can create dialogue, proving that contrasting artistic languages can coexist, challenge, and strengthen one another.

Henri Matisse changed the way we see colour—and Chez Matisse proves why.

Abstract art doesn’t need decoding. It needs five minutes and an open body.
Stop hunting for “what it is” — that’s not the job. Start with color and emotion: what do you feel in the first five seconds? Use your body — step close, step back, let the scale do its work. Notice what the artist left out, because empty space is a decision too. And trust your reaction. “I don’t like it” is a valid, informed response.

Diogo Barros Pires paints people who aren’t quite anyone — pieced together from memory, stereotype, and whoever was in the room.

A birkin held like a weapon. A double self-portrait where the mirror lies. A blonde braid built entirely out of assumption. And, in soft pastel, Diogo turns the same unsparing gaze on his own face.
“I was trying to do her and it ended up looking like me.”
Crayon, pastel, acrylic — thick color, unfinished faces, portraits that keep slipping into self-portraits.
