Last year, my younger brother passed away. On his first anniversary, I presented Jean’s portrait to my parents. It was my first attempt at watercolour portraiture, a medium I purposely chose to express his youth in colour. Some finishing touches are pending, waiting for me to find the mood to dive back into my most challenging subject so far - Jean 🤍

A few days ago Mark Mallia asked me to meet at his studio. He wanted to work on a project together. It was an open invitation, he simply asked that I message before. Regretfully, our busy lives got in the way, thinking that we’ll find the right time later.

I’ve known Mark for around 15 years, before our common interest in art mattered. With a casual, down to earth composure, he’d always express himself boldly - something that will forever live on in his work.

He’s encouraged me to pick up a paintbrush when I lost touch, pushed me to exhibit my work which he always supported and believed in, and stood up for me when my art was stolen - in a bold and unique way only he knew how (For those who knew Mark, just imagine!)

Regretfully I didn’t message, and now it’s too late. Malta yesterday lost a man who would, without fail, stand up to controversy. It is the world however that has lost a true creative.

May the heavens become your new studio 🙏🏻
