A história do Doclisboa e do Prémio Sakharov cruza-se, não só através dos laureados retratados nos filmes que passam pelo festival, mas também pela partilha de um objectivo comum: a defesa dos direitos humanos e, em específico, a defesa da liberdade de expressão e pensamento.
O Prémio Sakharov para a Liberdade de Pensamento é uma forma de reconhecimento atribuída pelo Parlamento Europeu para homenagear indivíduos, grupos e organizações que tenham dado um contributo excecional para a defesa da liberdade de pensamento, dos direitos humanos e das liberdades fundamentais.

The histories of Doclisboa and the Sakharov Prize intersect, not only through the laureates portrayed in the films screened at the festival, but also through their shared commitment to a common goal: the defense of human rights and, specifically, the defense of freedom of expression and thought.
