International Conference on 18th Architecture & Culture “Books with a view, Celebrating the birth of the Portuguese architect and city planner Eugénio dos Santos (1711-1760) The year of 2011 celebrates three hundred years since the birth of Eugénio dos Santos (b. 18.03.1711-25.08.1760), the Portuguese architect and city planner who, among other projects, was responsible for the plans to rebuild Li
sbon after the earthquake of November 1, 1755. His artistic and technical training, his architectonic production, his aesthetic preferences and some of the books in his private library (comprising 160 titles), reflect a person that embodied the transition between two significant moments in Portuguese culture. A contextual approach is thus essential to identify the underlying principles sustaining his work. Therefore, to celebrate his birth, we welcome contributions to cultural representation(s) that, directly or indirectly, would add to the eighteenth-century’s artistic practice and theory focusing on the following thematic itinerary:
1 The logic of time;
2 Writings on Architecture and city planning;
3 Private and royal libraries (patronage, space concepts, architectural decoration, furniture, catalogues...);
4 Recommended books and forbidden books;
5 Printed books: arts and techniques (typography, page layout, engravings, bindings, and materials).

Em 2011 cumprem-se trezentos anos sobre o nascimento de Eugénio dos Santos (18.03.1711-25.08.1760), arquitecto e engenheiro que, entre outros projectos, foi o responsável pelo plano de reconstrução da cidade de Lisboa depois do Terramoto de 1 de Novembro de 1755. A formação artística e técnica, a produção arquitectónica, as opções estéticas e algumas escolhas de títulos da sua biblioteca particular revelam uma figura de transição entre dois momentos significativos da cultura portuguesa. Infelizmente, Eugénio dos Santos não deixou o suporte teórico da sua obra arquitectónica. Assim, para aceder aos fundamentos que a sustentam, torna-se inevitável uma aproximação contextual. Por isso, pretendemos celebrar esta efeméride convocando contributos sobre as mais diversas representações culturais europeias, que reverteram, directa ou indirectamente, para a teoria e prática artísticas do século XVIII, em geral, e para aquelas que prevaleceram no âmbito nacional, em particular, de acordo com o itinerário temático seguinte:
1 A lógica do tempo;
2 Escritos sobre a arquitectura e a cidade;
3 Livros prescritos e livros proscritos;
4 Bibliotecas reais e bibliotecas particulares (encomenda, conceitos de espaço, decoração fixa, mobiliário, catálogos...);
5 Livros impressos: artes e técnicas (tipografia, paginação, impressão, encadernação e materiais);
