A cloud is seldom a cloud. It’s an appearance, a presence, a metaphor, an analogy, an omen, a state of mind, but almost never is a closed cloud in the atmospheric sense of the term. To the many cloud denotations even more connotations correspond, which in their cultural codification change as easily and quickly as the shapes of the clouds that we observe in the sky. The clouds that Lea Managil shows us in “We'll feed the dream as long as we can” are located in the wide latitude of the myth which is the dynamics of collective perception or the poetics of the unspeakable that guide the meaning(s), and not the opposite.
In this exhibition, each cloud insinuates itself into concomitant synesthesia and polysemy, as both (our) imaginary and sensorial participate in the understanding of the displayed element. Throughout the gallery, the cloud is shown as an image (embroidered), a pattern, a game of shadows, an object, summoning the iconic semiotic triad, index and symbol in a game of multiple meanings. Each cloud, named after a giant, accumulates different plastic, visual and narrative layers that contribute to a cyclical awareness of what is done and falls apart, as if it were a dream. The different climatic representations affect (us) physically, being the body that determines what each cloud talks about.

“Só uma batota por jogo” exhibition from AIRES DE GAMEIRO

“After some time, memories become one. Moments, happenings and treasures melt into the single motion of someone’s hand or the geometrics of the sweets that had been lying on the living room table – For SÓ UMA BATOTA POR JOGO, Aires de Gameiro takes and expands these situations that become the picture forming what will later be the sole abstract image left of these memories. In his paintings and sculptures that have taken over the gallery space, he displays them like a photo album that he urgently feels the need to share to an audience that mustn’t necessarily be able to read his codes. Nothing in the works, the space or the viewing of it is chronological. Instead, the painter shows a collection of what has been collected in his mind, which is always something that was never meant to be translated. It is the only form that memory must take on in De Gameiros work: a fractured, situative one.

Like memory, the paintings start out being a singular element of the space, but they expand in the room, fill it out, take over. The artist’s codes, the clear, bright, subjective colors, the cutting-edge abstract forms, can never be figurative images. They have to be symbols that represent these associations with the past. Mountains, geometrics, snakes, pink clouds. All paintings are framed by reliefs, correlating with the images shown inside of them; becoming paintings themselves, becoming the walls of the space, carrying and being carried. This rearranging of motifs, taking attributes of display and sculpture and turning them into installations follow the question that is key-essential to the artists work. Shapes lose their order, blurring the power over what is being shown and being represented. Aires de Gameiro pursues this alleged hierarchy, until everything is inside the painting: the memory, the viewer, the three-dimensional space.”

[Brief note about the exhibition]

The work that composes this exhibition, because this is about a composition in space, leads us to reflect on the occupation of the gallery as a common space. A sort of shared condominium, fragmented and apparently connected by the symbolic value of the displayed objects: the photographs, the sculptures/scaffolds/bed frames, and a full-scale image, memoir of the experience and of a convulsing place, from a standpoint of the artist in a pool at a hotel rooftop over the city of Beirut. Nothing is left from the look over the city living a revolution, just an image of wellness, yet lonesome, printed on an outdoor vinyl that redefines the notion of presence, memory, and the way that communication can be a political and economic tool that decants for the observer a generic place that can be confused with any other. Just like the light of the images of the desirable apartments for rent that blur the gentrification of the place, its otherness, the social, ethnic, economic and identity differences that apparently attribute its wealth and cultural diversity. But that remains outside of the frame, without visual existence and thus without memory, regardless of the hierarchy of their distribution channels.
An isolated sculpture, composed of a model based on a styrofoam plinth and a photograph of a mold made of synthetic material, confronts us with an utopian model of a construction, which, like the sculptures/scaffoldings/bed frames, reveals in manual ex*****on the labor dimension of work that constitutes a future memory of the project for a gentrification museum.
