| Behind Freedom BY Emmanuel Ugwu

In Behind Freedom, the artist weaves a quiet tension between grace and restraint, using the delicacy of watercolor to unfold a layered meditation on the nature of autonomy.

Hands emerge, tender yet firm, cradling a glowing spherical form that bears a human face - part mask, part soul. Rendered in warm amber hues and kissed by cool blue tones, the image breathes with contradiction. Above it all, a veil of translucent white drapery floats, suggesting both shelter and suppression - the comfort of care, and the weight of control.

The work is as much about absence as presence. The artist’s mastery of negative space and gentle fluidity reveals the spaces where power is held, where freedom slips, and where it is redefined by unseen forces.

Behind Freedom asks us to consider:
Can freedom ever be untouched by the hands that offer it?
And what is the cost of holding it too tightly?

Based in Cape Town, digital painter Ruan Jooste creates hand-drawn portraits that seamlessly navigate the intersection of nostalgia and contemporary luxury culture.

His practice explores the complex layers of South African identity, utilizing bold colors and elements of magic realism to celebrate the “rainbow nation.”

By meticulously manipulating the digital stylus, Jooste achieves a precise painterly texture that captures the grit of urban life alongside iconic branding and high-fashion aesthetics.

His work functions as a vibrant archive of shared cultural memory, turning everyday visual symbols into powerful statements on human connection and modern resilience.

This week Afrikanizm welcomes back Joana Solla with an arresting new body of mixed-media work that challenges the boundaries of contemporary portraiture.

Solla uses a sophisticated layering technique, merging fluid acrylics with raw, textured collages to dismantle and reconstruct the human form.

Her latest pieces function as an architectural study of emotion, where vibrant color blocks segment and isolate features to create deep psychological depth.

By balancing heavy textures against clean minimalist lines, the artist captures a complex tension between vulnerability and absolute structural strength.

In today’s Behind the Canvas, Azeez invites us into the streets he never stopped studying.

The Artist travels across Nigeria with one intention: to understand people — how they live, what shapes them, how their environment leaves its mark.

That research becomes paint.

Working with acrylic, oil, and gesso, he builds surfaces that feel like the city itself — layered, textured, worn. His figures emerge from fragmented lines and crumbling backgrounds, never fully resolved. Always in motion.

“I travel around Nigeria so that I can study the people, their environment and how it affects them. In this way I use the experiences I have gained in my work.”

Coexistence. Identity. Resilience. Not as themes — as textures you can almost touch.

| The textile is the text.

In African visual cultures, history, spirituality, and social contracts were never merely written down—they were woven, dyed, stamped, and worn.

From the linguistic geometry of Ghanaian Kente to the non-verbal archives of Malian Bogolanfini, textiles have long functioned as active, readable state documents and personal declarations.

Today, contemporary masters are reactivating this tactile database, transforming ancestral heritage into powerful acts of modern resistance.

Swipe through to explore how weaving traditions code knowledge and power across the continent.

In this art piece environmental consciousness confronts the raw poetry of human rest.

Abimbola masterfully juxtaposes the heavy, synthetic mass of discarded plastic with the vulnerability of the sleeping figures reclined upon them.

The image functions as a powerful critique of global consumerism, turning a site of ecological crisis into an intimate canvas of contemporary survival and labor.

Through a sophisticated use of warm, natural light, the artist elevates the mundane reality of waste collection into an authoritative commentary on economic resilience.

The figures become part of the landscape, prompting a profound symbolic dialogue about the environments we inherit, inhabit, and transform.

An elegant and arresting observation of modern life that lingers long after the first glance.

He doesn’t paint spectacle. He paints the moment just before and just after.

In today’s Behind The Canvas, Falope invites us into a visual language of realism with impressionist undertones—precise enough to render dignity, loose enough to let feeling through.

His subjects are familiar: markets, labour, trade, bodies in motion.
The mundane rhythms of contemporary Nigerian life become a record of culture, identity, and a society in constant negotiation with itself.

“My works pay homage to transcendental culture and the personalities engaged in buying and selling as it evolves.”

Abiodun is a name to follow—Top 10 at Nike Art Gallery’s Best Art of the Year, exhibited at Thought Pyramid and Mydrim Gallery, Lagos.

This is realism as an act of witness.
