Last month we ran the pilot for a new art residency programme in Central Portugal - Ecologias da Água - dedicated to a sensitive relationship with the living world, and specifically with water and wetland ecosystems. Participating artists are invited to discover these ecosystems through walking tours and discussions with guides, scientists and local residents, in order to develop their work in interaction with these ecosystems.

For the first edition, we have invited Guy Fleisher, a multidisciplinary sound artist based in Porto, to further develop his work Everyday Sounds. Currently pursuing a PhD in Science and Technology of the Arts at the Center for Research in Science and Technology (CITAR), Guy Fleisher’s research centers on electroacoustic environmental composition and draw inspiration from various acoustic ecology concepts.

The residency concluded with participatory activities for the local community, in the form of a creative workshop and a sound performance presenting the results of the workshop and the artist’s fieldwork. 🔎🌿

We invite you to discover two new articles on our website dedicated to this project, highlighting the artistic process and telling the story of the Lis river, the central character of our research, which rises from underground. Links in bio. ⛰️

We would like to take this opportunity to thank again everyone involved in making this project a unique creative and human adventure!

This article follows Robertina Sebjanic’s artistic journey ; from an early fascination of the sea to building her artistic identity around water ecosystems, she has always placed the human / more-than-human relation at the core of her engagement, highlighting its complexity and our responsibility in keeping a healthy balance.

Her practice relies on empathetic strategies, collaborative methods and storytelling. She strives to give a voice to all the protagonists involved through the use of sound, visuals, and even sometimes smell, in order to appeal to our senses and connect in depth to our own humanity.

Her latest project “Echoes of the Abyss” addresses the impact of decaying munition on marine ecosystems ; a new variation, “Adriatic I: Echoes of the Abyss”, which focuses on the Adriatic Sea, will be presented at the Filodrammatica Gallery in Rijeka from 6th of March 2025, as part of the collective exhibition “(Un)Tamed Sea”, an initiative organised and supported by and , within the framework of

We are starting the year with a new article on Robertina Sebjanic’s project Lygophilia, a series of 4 installations mirroring the history of Mexican axolotls and Slovenian proteus.

The project’s starting point lies in their extraordinary biological abilities ; both known for their regenerative and neotenous characteristics, they have been studied by scientists throughout history, leading them to perform cruel experiments in laboratories. Despite their tragic fate, the aquatic animals have always been part of local folklore, either as gods or mythical creatures, and still represent strong national symbols 🦎
The artist brings us back to the present day by highlighting the critical endangerment of the species, questioning our responsibility as human beings and our impact on aquatic - and more-than-human - ecosystems.

By giving us the keys to understanding the complex facets of the past and present history of the axolotls and proteus, she embarks us on a journey of discovery while taking us out of our comfort zone in a simple, poetic way.

An exhibition was on show at the kunstgewerbemuseum of Berlin recently, and the video essay and sound piece are available on the artist’s website.

In June we had a great opportunity to go to the Danube Delta for our research on wetlands with wonderful humans .zenovia, , , .vreme.moser and and of course, our amazing host .eu 🎣

Our biggest questions are : how to think cultural projects in the long term in European natural havens that face such great environmental, social and economical challenges ? How to be relevant and respectful of their inhabitants, humans and more-than-humans ? What can we learn from such complex ecosystems? And what role can art play in this ?

This first mobility project was supported by . If this was a small introduction, we are now ready to get to know this beautiful and wild territory 🪷

Partners : .eu, , .pt, and Danube Delta National Institute of R&D

Here’s to Springs 🌱 This new article invites us to discover ’s project “Under the Calculative Gaze” through which she simultaneously informs and warns us about our unwanted exposure to AI systems in various domains of activities, public and private, and gives us hope for societal resilience. The project features examples of algorithmic surveillance in the workplace but also strong human experiences, individual and collective, that show we still have the power to stand up against injustices ✊

The project is supported by and , and will be exhibited at .at in Linz, Austria, for Art Meets Radical Openness (), a festival dedicated to art, hacktivism, and open culture, or in other words, an event you don’t want to miss!

Exhibition opening : 7th May
AMRO 2024 : 8th - 11th May
Exhibition : 8th - 29th May
