Looking for an accurate surfboard volume calculator?

Most of them ask your weight and hand you a number. That number is a starting point, not an answer.

Here's why. Your board does two completely different jobs. While you paddle it works like a displacement hull: it sits in the water and has to push that water aside to move forward. More volume, less water in the way, easier paddling. Once you catch a wave it works like a planing hull, skimming over the surface. At that point volume matters much less and too much of it starts working against you.

That's the dilemma. More liters means more waves. Fewer liters means more maneuverability.

Our tool takes it all into account and gives you your volume, plus the three boards that fit you.

A lot of surfers think big waves need big fins. Actually, it's the opposite.

This video explains, in simple terms, what a surfboard fin really does and why a smaller fin is the better choice in big waves.

In it, a fin breaks mid-turn, so you can see the difference between what a fin does when it's there and what's missing the moment it's gone.

Then the numbers. On a one-metre wave, your fin carries around 7 kilos. On a six-metre wave, it's around 63 kilos. Same fin. That's why what works in small waves becomes too much in big ones.

This is a clip from our video, "Surfboard fin size: why big waves need smaller fins". The full version breaks it all down. You can find it on: https://magicboardfinder.com/

How do you find the right tail shape for a barrel? Build the wave, drop a flat plate in it, see what fits.

Full breakdown on YouTube — search Magic Board Finder.

Why a wide board or thick rails throw you out of a barrel.

The weight of the surfer is the same, so the rail sits no deeper in the wave. But the wider or the thicker the board, the further your feet sit from the balance point. Then it rolls and you fall.

Narrow board, thin rails in big barrels!

The full breakdown — outline, rocker, width, rails, length, fins — is on YouTube. Search Magic Board Finder.

Do surfers need smaller fins in bigger waves? Simple question.

I'm making a short video about exactly that question. I asked AI to help me with structuring the video script. Uninvited, it started talking about "drive." So I challenged it: okay, explain what drive actually is. Show me.

It produced diagram 1 below.
The "grip" arrow is pointing in the same direction as the movement of the board. Really?

So I pushed back. It apologised and tried again — diagram 2.
Now drive is gone and you have only drag? Strange.

The information about surfboard hydrodynamics floating around the internet is full of half-truths. AI can only reflect the fog that's already out there. It can't see through it.

This is exactly why we built Magic Board Finder, because understanding how boards and fins really work takes more than scraping the internet.

So: my video on big waves and small fins is coming soon. 🌊

And after this little experiment… it looks like I need to make one about drive too 😉

1m waves. 8s period.
Do you grab the 6’ shortboard or the 7’ mid-length? 🤔🌊

Most surfers guess.
We broke down exactly which board to take in different surf conditions and more importantly, why.

We added a new section to our website with real surf scenarios, board choices and explanations to help you make the right call before you paddle out.

You can check it out here:

How to match your surfboard to different wave conditions. Understand how waves influence your choice and pick the right board every session.

When Torq Surfboard specialists join forces with a smart algorithm, there’s no more guessing, just clear guidance. 💪

One of the most overrated surfboard design features?

Something we often noticed in the shop: surfers walk in asking for a specific tail shape … but nobody ever asks for a 2.5” tail rocker.

Yet rocker has way more impact on how a board actually rides.

Tail shape matters, but is often overestimated. As Rusty Preisendorfer says: ‘It’s the whole package that counts, tails are embellishments.
