Some artists use colour to make noise. Samuel Santos creates a sepia mood — even when sepia is not the only colour.
Born in Aveiro and now based in Madeira, Samuel is a long-standing resident artist at Art Center Caravel. His paintings carry the atmosphere of old photographs: muted light, earthy tones, quiet shadows and a sense of something remembered rather than simply observed.

Behind this distinctive mood are questions about loneliness, isolation and the human search for meaning. For ISLANDS 2026 — SOIL & TERRA, Samuel’s visual world finds its natural ground — somewhere between earth, memory and the inner landscapes we carry with us.

A new team has just started working at our ARTHub Madeira Art Center Caravel
New faces, new ideas, laptops 💻 open, coffee ☕️ready — and conversations that sound suspiciously like the beginning of something interesting.

♻️ A new project. New partnerships. New opportunities.

ARTE.M Association ARTE.M Association & ARThub Madeira 🎨 together with ARTHub Madeira, has officially joined PLASTY – PLAStic-to-Treasure: Youth Labs for Creative Reuse and Zero Waste, a new Erasmus+ project connecting partners from Portugal, Greece, Italy and Türkiye.

Over the next two years, together with our partners AFCS – Action for the Civil Society (Greece) Action for the Civil Society DIMBAYA (Italy) Associazione Dimbaya and EASID (Türkiye), we’ll explore how creativity, art and non-formal education can give discarded plastic a new purpose through workshops, webinars, international learning activities and a training mobility in Italy.

At the same time, we’re building new collaborations across Madeira and Porto Santo, connecting artists, makers, designers, schools, youth organisations and creative minds interested in sustainability and creative reuse.

Together with the children from SocioHabita Funchal’s Summer Camp, we spent 2 days getting our hands dirty 😉—and discovering that soil is much more than just dirt.
As part of the “Soil Soul” 💚 project, we explored soil literacy through design, using creativity to learn how healthy soil supports plants, biodiversity, and life around us.
The highlight of the day? Making seed balls-small balls of clay, compost, and seeds that will one day bloom and feed pollinators. A tiny action today that can grow into something beautiful tomorrow.
A big thank you to the wonderful children and the SocioHabita Funchal EM team for sharing this day with us!
