Today we celebrate "Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas"— a day to honour Portugal, the Portuguese people, the rich Lusophone culture, and the vibrant Portuguese communities around the world.

In South Africa, we especially recognise the Portuguese community whose energy, culture, and contributions continue to enrich our nation in so many meaningful ways. This special day also pays tribute to the legendary poet Luís de Camões, whose epic masterpiece “Os Lusíadas” immortalised Portugal’s spirit of discovery and remains a national treasure.

The South African Embassy in Lisbon, sends its warmest congratulations to the Portuguese Government and to all Portuguese Citizens.

🕊️ In Memory of José Luís Silva 🕊️

The Madeiran and Portuguese community in South Africa has lost a dedicated and respected voice.

Born in Madeira, José Luís Silva devoted much of his life to serving the Portuguese community in South Africa. As a journalist and correspondent for Jornal da Madeira, he became widely known for defending and supporting the Portuguese emigrant community, especially in speaking out against crime affecting many Portuguese families and businesses.

He was also actively involved with the Portuguese Forum in South Africa and served as “Conselheiro das Comunidades Madeirenses”, always working to strengthen and unite the Madeiran diaspora abroad.

His dedication, courage and love for Madeira and its people will always be remembered.
