For the Romanian artist Mara Rusu Mara Rusu landscape is never only what appears in front of us. It enters quietly, changes our perception and becomes part of who we are.

During the artistic residency created for ISLANDS 2026 — SOIL & TERRA, Mara and her Romanian colleagues developed new works dedicated to Madeira. Each encountered the same island, yet returned with a different one.

In Mara’s work, Madeira becomes a place where landscape and identity meet — and where simply being somewhere can begin to change us.

There is something almost meditative about looking closely at nature.

In her illustrations, Lize-Mari de Abreu captures Madeira’s fauna through clean forms, delicate lines and an almost perfectionist attention to detail.

She observes the island with curiosity and respect — accepting nature as it is, in all its strange and beautiful forms.

Some artists use colour to make noise. Samuel Santos creates a sepia mood — even when sepia is not the only colour.
Born in Aveiro and now based in Madeira, Samuel is a long-standing resident artist at Art Center Caravel. His paintings carry the atmosphere of old photographs: muted light, earthy tones, quiet shadows and a sense of something remembered rather than simply observed.

Behind this distinctive mood are questions about loneliness, isolation and the human search for meaning. For ISLANDS 2026 — SOIL & TERRA, Samuel’s visual world finds its natural ground — somewhere between earth, memory and the inner landscapes we carry with us.

Discover Samuel Santos as part of ISLANDS 2026 — SOIL & TERRA, opening on 23 September at Art Center Caravel, supported by Câmara Municipal do Funchal and curated by José Zyberchema.

ISLANDS 2026 — SOIL & TERRA continues to reveal its artists. 🎥

This time — Carsten Peters, a German artist living and working in Madeira.
Found wood, stone and metal — their grain, fractures and traces of weathering — become the starting point for his sculptures. Inspired also by reflections, currents and waves, Carsten explores the dialogue between natural form and artistic intervention, movement, time and transformation.

SARGASSUM — for the first time at Art Center Caravel.

Seaweed carried by the Atlantic. Flowers collected on the island. Natural paper made slowly by hand.

In the new collection, sargassum and petals remain visible inside the paper — sometimes almost transparent, sometimes forming unexpected little compositions.

Notebooks and bookmarks, each one slightly different.
Madeira, caught somewhere between the sea and the page.

For the first time at Art Center Caravel — Cristina Perneta Cristina Perneta
Her work begins with the landscape, not only as something to observe, but as something to work with directly. Earth, charcoal, plants and natural pigments become part of her artistic language, connecting painting with ecology, memory and the rhythms of nature.
Deeply inspired by Madeira, Cristina finds in the island’s landscape, silence and stillness the material and space for her creative practice.

Today, we’re delighted to introduce Andris Višņevskis — a Latvian maker based in Portugal and founder of Atelier d’Guide atelier d’ Guide. His practice explores natural fibres, handmade paper, and sustainable craftsmanship, transforming h**p and flax into works that celebrate the beauty of nature.

For Soil & Terra, Andris presents Earth Palette — a new installation inspired by the colours, textures, and living memory of soil. The exhibition will mark the Madeira premiere of this remarkable project.
