Today we present the art curator of the exhibition “Islands.2026: Soil & Terra” — José Zyberchema , a man whose presence transformed Santa Maria Street into a place of hope, culture, and living art.

For years, his passion has connected people, artists, and stories, giving new soul to the streets of Funchal and inspiring everyone who believes in the power of creativity.

On September 21, we invite you to discover this new artistic journey with us.

Thank you for these 4 intense and beautiful months with us — full of work, craft, collaborations, creative chaos, exhibitions, coffee talks… and yes, even some unexpected weather surprises 🌦️😅

Your energy, ideas and talent became part of our everyday life here, and we are pretty sure this story is not ending here. More collaborations are definitely coming very soon ✨

🌍 OPEN CALL — Islands. 2026: Soil & Terra

Art Center Caravel and ARTE.M Association .m.association officially announce the open call for the new edition of Islands. 2026 — Soil & Terra.

Since 2015, Islands has been developed as an evolving exhibition platform dedicated to contemporary artistic practices connected to island territories, ecology, memory, and human relationships with landscape.

For the 2026 edition, we turn toward the ground itself.

Soil & Terra explores soil as memory, pigment, texture, archive, and living ecosystem. Through installations, natural pigments, recycled materials, ecological interventions, sound, craft, and participatory artistic practices, the exhibition reflects on sustainability, ecological awareness, slowness, and our fragile connection with the earth beneath us.

Curatorship: Jose Zyberchema.

We welcome artists, designers, crafters, researchers, and interdisciplinary creators working with sustainability, ecology, contemporary craft, natural materials, land art, community practices, and sensory artistic approaches.

The exhibition is developed with the support of the Municipality of Funchal.

We begin a new interview series with artists, curators, and creative people living and working on Madeira — exploring sustainability, ecology, memory, and artistic practice through personal conversations.
Our first guest is artist Lize-Mari De Abreu, whose work reflects on transformation, slowness, nature, and the emotional connection between people and place.

♻️Bring your old footwear and together we’ll transform it into bold wearable art using paint, textiles, reconstruction techniques, and sustainable fashion practices 🌿
