Sometimes life gets sh*tty…

And it’s difficult to know what to do with thoughts and feelings that feel like a tangled mess of overwhelm…in a healthy and proactive way that is…

Since I was a kid I’ve used art to help me manage and regulate my emotions- although I didn’t know that terminology at the time- it’s exactly what happens when you release complicated thoughts using art 🎨

We will be doing a 7-day creative exploration called Shadow to Self, using art and journaling to reflect and develop the Inner Self.🖤

The power of a pen!!

There are loads of studies that point to art’s power in calming the nervous system- done regularly and with focus it can really change your state of being.

Try it for yourself and witness your thoughts, your body and time itself dissolving 🙌😉

I used to think struggling with motivation meant there was something wrong with me- like I just wasn’t cut out for doing my own thing as a self-employed artist/teacher.

That I was lazy, inconsistent or lacking discipline.

But a lot of the time procrastination is your mind protecting you from something you’re unaware of.

Sometimes there’s a part of you that feels:
overwhelmed
afraid to fail
afraid to be seen
emotionally exhausted
Etc. etc.

Until you become aware of THAT part of yourself, you’ll keep fighting your own mind instead of understanding it and working with it.

That’s what shadow work has really become for me.

Not endlessly digging into trauma and negative experiences

Just becoming MORE AWARE of myself in the moment, which includes thoughts and emotions.

Art helps me do that faster than thinking or talking ever does 💛

Your thoughts dictate your behaviours and you’re to blame…

Hear me out. We are so quick to blame others and judge ourselves, for our emotional outbursts, resentment, our problem saying NO, for our people-pleasing, doom-scrolling, procrastinating…

For not being where we “should” be in life…

Your thoughts dictate your behaviour in very subtle and incremental ways…and you are the one propelling them! This is how:

The more you think a thought- the easier it is to think that thought

The more you think a thought, the stronger the neural connection becomes

The more it feels like FACT.

Can you control your thoughts??

No.

Not even the greatest monks in the world can control their thoughts. What they CAN do is let them pass without identifying, fixating or holding on to them.

What they DON’T do is BELIEVE their thoughts. Their thoughts have no weight , and so, disappear with the same speed they arrived.

“So I have to become a monk now?? That’s not gonna happen”

No you don’t need to become a monk, you don’t even need to meditate.

What you DO need to do is become more aware of what’s going on in your head and make slow changes to your thinking process.

Either that, or you will never change. Which is fine if you don’t want your life to change.

Journaling in a very specific way and making art in a very specific way can help you to become more aware of your thoughts and begin to change them. Then your behaviours change, then your life will change.

You are the ONLY one who can do this. No one else.
