Zoe Thompson is a London-based zine-maker and facilitator. Her work combines book-binding, zine-making and creative writing. She champions the power of zine culture as a radical tool of expression and designs workshops centred around embodied play; facilitating warm, joyful and accessible spaces for collective making.

During her 6-week residency, Zoe explored the artist book as a vessel for storytelling. Focusing primarily on strengthening her bookbinding skills, she experimented with exposed stitch bindings, concertinas, pamphlets and compiled a 50-page poetry collection.

For Zoe, this was an exciting opportunity to find a balance between her primary practice of zine-making, which welcomes imperfection, with book-binding, a craft that favours precision.

"I'm super grateful to have had the time and space to develop my practice and just play. I plan to continue making little artist books and potentially making an edition of my poetry collection."

Leigh Miller is a photographer and multimedia artist from Northern California.

"During my residency at Aviário Studio, my goal  was to focus on creating a body of work using alternative photographic processes, primarily cyanotype. The finished prints are toned with coffee and compiled into an artist book.

My project, The Quiet in Between, explores moments that are not the main event, but the spaces before or after. I am drawn to quiet streets, overlooked details, and places of transition that invite reflection and contemplation.

At its core, this work is about appreciating and honoring these often-unnoticed moments. In a culture focused on destinations and milestones, I am interested in the pauses, anticipation, and lingering traces that make up so much of our daily experience. Through photography and the cyanotype process, I hope to encourage viewers to slow down and recognize the beauty and significance of the quiet in between."

Che Sabalja is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of art-making, meditation, and sensory experience to challenge conventional thinking and foster empathetic, contemplative connections.

During her artist residency at Aviário, Che devoted her practice to meditative contemplation and the continued evolution of her artistic journey. Incorporating the Portuguese landscape through spontaneous digital photography, she challenged herself to remain fully present, shedding any preconceived compositions or outcomes, instead focusing solely on texture, color, line, and the heightened imagery encountered though nature.

Using monoprinting as a foundation, she constructed a temporal experience through mixed media. The immediacy of these interactions and responses within the printmaking process became a method of sustaining presence. Adding another layer to this immediacy, she avoided pre-planning her additional materials, instead working intuitively with whatever media was readily available, again reinforcing a practice grounded in the present moment.

The series builds upon themes of impermanence, embodied observation, and intuitive mark-making, exploring how creativity and process converge through acts of attentive presence.

Inspired by fellow artists, Che also continued exploring art through spontaneous clay sessions, using both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques while focusing on staying present.

Sabalja holds a B.F.A. and M.S. from C.W. Post, Long Island University, and an M.A. from New York University, and was a Zankel Fellow and Ed.D.Candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Sally Cleary is an Australian multidisciplinary artist based in France that works with the concepts of the Still Life genre, related to nature and ecology. Her artistic techniques range from ceramics and art installation combining found objects and ephemeral materials, to making sculptural objects from paper and other materials, photography, projection and video. She is currently developing a new series of installation artworks, based on the demise of the underwater world, due to climate change. She has more than 30 years of experience working as a professional artist, both in Australia, where she was a lecturer at the School of Art, RMIT University, Melbourne; and France, where she has been living since 2014. She has a PhD in art, researching the Still lIfe genre in the 21st century, related to mixed media installation art and ecology.

At Aviário Studio Sally spent two weeks exploring some new concepts in porcelain ceramics and paper which can be displayed on walls and windows. She experimented with different techniques and materials in hand-building ceramics, and moulded paper to achieve a new range of different organic forms and textures. The second 2 week of her residency she spent in the print making studio, making books, cyanotype prints and etching, with the assistance of the studio co-ordinator. This was a new experience for her which has opened up a new pathway for her to develop new artworks in paper. Her aim is to develop these concepts further for future exhibitions.

Maeve is a multidisciplinary artist based in Portland, Maine, USA. Using clay, wood and metal, they focus on how to capture complex human feeling, connecting emotional expression with  identity, the natural world, and the divine.

At Aviário studios, Maeve focused on creating 2 sculptures- a clay bust and a found driftwood piece. The bust was a work that pushed the artist to focus more on proportion and scale. The busts intense stare served as a striking source of question and interpretation, until placed in nature. With one ear replaced on the heart, the figure is called to listen with compassion, to protect the natural world. Using driftwood, Maeve’s non objective wood piece expressed themes of the fierce and weathered with an ear to listen.

Ferreria de Zêzere’s beautiful landscapes inspired the natural elements of Maeve’s work heavily. Using wood found from the river and an uprooted forest as a backdrop for the bust, themes of the local recent storms forest degradations serve as a reminder to protect the earth and listen to ‘mother nature'.

Maeve’s time at Aviário was a joy and they hope to return!

Kareen Hague is a Canadian artist recognized for her vibrant, textural paintings that combine paper, mixed media, and sewn textiles on raw canvas. Her work reflects a contemplative connection to nature, expressed through richly layered abstraction and luminous colour.

During her time at Aviário Studio, Kareen developed a series inspired by fieldflowers, viewed from the immersive perspective of sitting among the foliage and looking toward the sky. She also expanded her practice into dimensional fabric sculpture on canvas, experimenting with clay elements that became integrated into her sculptural wall works. In addition, she explored cyanotype techniques, silhouetting foliage against vivid, expressive backgrounds.

Nathan Goddard is a Ceramic Artist and Landscape Painter from Red Lodge, Montana, USA. His pottery uses a technique called Mono Print Transfer, incorporating the land as Earthenscape imagery. These pots are woodfired at his home studio in Montana.

While at Aviário Studio,  Nathan was exploring and focusing on printing on clay, incorporating screen printing directly onto clay and screen print transfer. The studio offered him a time and space to continue to develop a project series of travel diary paintings. He took one of the  afternoon workshops Cristiana offered and began translated these diary paintings into cyanotype prints.

“I have a new direction for this project and am very excited at the potential. Having the time to create and explore new mediums within a new country like Portugal has been a gift of time and an expansion of cultural community. I look forward to returning to Aviário Studio.”

Margaret Craig is an American multidisciplinary artist and a hybrid printmaker whose work involves the way humans treat and think about the environment and our interaction with fellow creatures within it.

At Aviário Studio, Margaret worked cross-discipline between printmaking and ceramics.  Her intimate world of reflections about nature organically grew through printing, collaging, and molding, expanding from smaller elements to bigger and more complex visual systems.
