Hi, I'm Rui :)

I find myself an explorer, with an increasing passion for handcrafts. Bamboo is such a special grass! It's begging to become a musical instrument, and I try to facilitate its way. Being 100% natural, each bamboo flute is a guaranteed challenge, since special attention must be given to the individual properties of each one. To me, the philosophy of making a flute out of bamboo is a

ligned with a sense of respect and communion with nature, never forcing the plant to become whatever I may want, but instead trying to maximize its potential given the shape. The process ends up being a metaphor for the values of persistence and respect. It's a permanent journey of learning. I developed a special interest for exotic scales, such as the Kokin-Joshi, Akebono or
the Arabian. These are great meditative and melodic modes, that will always sound soothing no matter the fi*****ng, making them very pleasent to play :)

Native American Style Flutes are also part of my interest, as well as the Andean Quenas and, of course, the transverse flutes. Any of the them can come with a major, harmonic minor, pentatonic or exotic scale :)

It's a profound feeling to be able to "engrave" a culture in a flute

Dear flute lovers,

I will not be accepting new orders on my website in the coming days so I can dedicate myself to those on the waiting list. I'm trying to find my balance, and making dozens of handcrafted flutes in a short amount of time – with the expectation of speed that times have accustomed us to – is becoming humanly impossible.

You will find most of the flutes marked with a 0 in stock for now. I hope to return with renewed energy and clearer communication within 2 to 3 weeks, and with some new things too!

Thank you very much for understanding, and for allowing me to make a living by drilling holes in tubes :) it still makes me wonder how I landed here.

[Momentary suspension of shipments to the USA via Normal Postal Services amidst Tariffs enforcement uncertainty]

Dear Flute lovers,

I regret to inform that due to the current Customs and Duties situation in the USA, and with the uncertanty that accompanies the enforcement of the new Import Duties (Tariffs), the Portuguese Postal Service, together with those of other European countries, has suspended the shipment to the USA.

As no sufficient instructions where given concerning how to implement DDP (delivery duties payed), -- and from what I can understand, that being the preferential option for CBP -- there's an enormous risk of parcels being rejected and sent back to origin.

As so, I have decided to temporarily suspend my shipments to the USA via the normal Postal Services, and will only be using the Private, Express options (which are still working for the time being, and will be around 3-4x more expensive + the import taxes).

Hope to come with better news next time, and maybe a flute or two 🙂

Here I share my new model: a Low F Whistle in Aluminium.
This is a tunable instrument, made with aluminium and Plastic, combining traditional and innovative methods. All acoustically relevant parts are made of metal, thus resulting in a sweet sounding instrument, yet loud and stable on the lower notes.

Aqui alguns exemplares do meu atual modelo em Ré, nas madeiras de pau cetim, oliveira, pau rosa, pau violeta e pau preto, respectivamente.

Depois de dois anos de pequenas alterações, estou satisfeito com o resultado :) É uma flauta "wide bore", ainda mais "wide" do que o arquétipo Pratten — muito utilizado na música tradicional Irlandesa —, com alguns tweaks implementados por mim para melhorar o equilíbrio de oitavas e a projecção e estabilidade do Ré (fundamental). Isto resulta num comportamento particularmente rico na 1ª oitava, mantendo uma 2ª oitava limpa.

A geometria do cone interno e o corte de embocadura são feitos, por defeito, tendo em vista a obtenção com facilidade de um timbre "reedy", rico em harmónicos parciais. Outros cortes de embocadura são também possíveis.
