In February 2024, a group of nine artists who had not met before took part in the international residency at PADA. Besides their individual projects and the collective exhibition, something else came out of this cohort. Collected Notes is about the experience of living and working together at PADA. It was deliberately thought to be printed and pinned in the notice board of the communal kitchen in the studios, so any other artists that would come after them could read it over a drink or a meal. For the sake of preserving this well read and used pages and to share it with even more artists, we now publish a scanned version of the document. PADA 43 is Fiona Campbell (UK), Ellie Foreman-Peck (UK), Joshua Challen Ice (US), Makiko Harris (US), Esther van der Heijden (NL), Mia Carl (DK), Bas Ruis (NL), Camilo Parra (CO) and Michelle Favin (US).

Em fevereiro de 2024, um grupo de nove artistas que nunca se tinham conhecido participou na residência internacional na PADA. Para além dos seus projetos individuais e da exposição coletiva, surgiu algo mais desta coorte. «Collected Notes» trata da experiência de viver e trabalhar em conjunto na PADA. Foi deliberadamente concebido para ser impresso e afixado no quadro de avisos da cozinha comum dos estúdios, para que quaisquer outros artistas que viessem depois deles pudessem lê-lo enquanto tomavam uma bebida ou uma refeição. Com o objetivo de preservar estas páginas tão lidas e utilizadas e de as partilhar com ainda mais artistas, publicamos agora uma versão digitalizada do documento. A PADA 43 é composta por Fiona Campbell (Reino Unido), Ellie Foreman-Peck (Reino Unido), Joshua Challen Ice (EUA), Makiko Harris (EUA), Esther van der Heijden (Países Baixos), Mia Carl (Dinamarca), Bas Ruis (Países Baixos), Camilo Parra (Colômbia) e Michelle Favin (EUA).

Camila Vale (Portugal, 1993) is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Barreiro. Her work focuses on analog cinema and archival imagery to explore the material memory of places and the everyday. Her practice intersects the domestic and the public spheres, observing ordinary gestures as vehicles for sensory and affective connections within a collective. This research is deeply shaped by her experience living in Spain, France, Belgium, Chile, and New York, allowing her to comparatively study daily routines and intimate relationships across different geographical contexts. Her practice spans film and audiovisual installations, and she currently teaches in the Cinema/Moving Image department at Lisbon’s Ar.Co.

Camila Vale (Portugal, 1993) é cineasta, artista visual e vive no Barreiro. O seu trabalho centra-se no cinema analógico e em imagens de arquivo para explorar a memória material dos lugares e do quotidiano. A sua prática cruza as esferas doméstica e pública, observando gestos comuns como veículos de ligações sensoriais e afetivas no seio de um coletivo. Esta investigação é profundamente marcada pela sua experiência de vida em Espanha, França, Bélgica, Chile e Nova Iorque, o que lhe permite estudar comparativamente as rotinas diárias e as relações íntimas em diferentes contextos geográficos. A sua prática abrange cinema e instalações audiovisuais, e atualmente leciona no departamento de Cinema/Imagem em Movimento do Ar.Co., em Lisboa.

This Long Range Studio Visit between Alice Sheppard-Fidler and Aimée Henny Brown took place over the phone in a single sitting. The following text is an edited transcript. They talk of memories of their residencies at PADA, the conversation unfolding into a wider reflection on making: on working with found and salvaged materials, following the intelligence of process, and allowing experimentation to guide a practice. Along the way, they discover they had unknowingly incorporated the same discarded chairs into different works. A great example of the connections that thread through residencies and the frugal and careful use of materials at PADA.

A dupla de artistas conversa sobre memórias das suas residências na PADA e refletem sobre a criação: trabalhar com materiais encontrados e recuperados, seguir a inteligência do processo e permitir que a experimentação guie a prática. Ao longo da conversa, descobrem que, sem saber, tinham incorporado as mesmas cadeiras descartadas em obras diferentes. Sustainable Practices and Resources. “Thoughts on Primrose solar cooking sculpture”, 2025, by Emory Hall. Read it through the link in our bio.

Emory Hall is an artist exploring the relationships between myth, health and toxicity. Through bioplastic material studies and welding, process shapes a language of decay. The visualization of time gives way towards a vision of escapism amidst a synthetic reality. Lives and works in Los Angeles (b. 1993 in Kansas City.) A recent graduate of CalArts Art and Technology MFA, she has exhibited as a resident of Espace Triphasè (Brussels, BE) and Reisig & Taylor Contemporary. A former chef at Oxbow School of Art and Artist’s Residency (Saugatuck, MI) her work often incorporates performative dinners and draws from a background of food styling and cooking in restaurants.

Sustainable Practices and Resources. “Futurepunk: From Artistic Laboratory to Solarpunk Realism”, by Aaron Inker. Read it through the link in our bio or at padastudios.com/spr.

aaron inker is a visual artist, educator, and cultural practitioner. He works with diverse media and socially engaged art to develop practices and experiences related to creative ecologies, exploring the relationships between human and ‘otherness’ at the intersection of art, science, and technology.

He is a co-founder of Spazio Hydro, an independent cultural centre in Biella (Italy), active in the development of new forms of cultural experience and co-curator of the public program Fluviale, a research path on water bodies dedicated to the investigation of the human-non-human relationship and the nature-culture dialectic.

Since last year, PADA has been inviting artists to share their practice and research on a page that serves as a growing library of sustainable practices and resources. Check the link in our bio for more information.

Aaron Inker é um artista visual, educador e profissional da cultura. Trabalha com diversos meios de comunicação e arte socialmente empenhada no desenvolvimento de práticas e experiências relacionadas com ecologias criativas, explorando as relações entre o ser humano e a «alteridade» na intersecção entre arte, ciência e tecnologia.

É cofundador do Spazio Hydro, um centro cultural independente em Biella (Itália), ativo no desenvolvimento de novas formas de experiência cultural, e cocurador do programa público Fluviale, um percurso de investigação sobre massas de água dedicado ao estudo da relação entre o humano e o não humano e à dialética natureza-cultura.

Last Saturday we opened our gallery door to showcase the works developed by PADA 57’s residents. This final exhibition was curated by Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues and combined the works of Enrique Traver, Francesca Van Haverbeke, Gaia D’Arrigo, Isha Naguiat, Johanna van der Linden, Kate Broad, Kim Winder, Laetitia Morais (Bolsa PADA), Marta Troya, Sophia Siersted.

No sábado passado, abrimos as portas da nossa galeria para apresentar os trabalhos criados por artistas da PADA 57. LRSV 04, Celso Rosa in conversation with Judith Brocklehurst. Read it through our link in bio or at padastudios.com/lrsv.

This Long Range studio visit brought together artists who met at PADA originally but were part of different programmes. Judith was part of the International residency and Celso was on The Bolsa Barreiro scholarship programme. The conversation circled around the sharing of a recipe for Cachupa that Celso used within a performance whilst at PADA.

They decided initially not to record the conversation allowing for a more free-flowing exchange letting them get to know each other a bit better, and figuring out shared aspects in each other’s respective practice. This first dialogue between them addressed the use of performance art as a way of bypassing the commercial and capitalistic aspects of the art world which allows for its non-commodification. They also spoke about the opportunity that PADA gave to them to experiment with a wide range of possibilities. The conversation then followed through addressing spontaneity in artistic creation, barriers, identity, food ingredients as art materials, culminating in the thought of food as resistance.

Celso e Judith encontraram-se e conversaram durante quase duas horas no WhatsApp, no dia 9 de setembro.

Decidiram, inicialmente, não gravar a conversa (para além de tomarem notas), o que permitiu uma troca mais espontânea, dando-lhes a oportunidade de se conhecerem um pouco melhor e de descobrirem aspetos comuns nas respetivas práticas artísticas.

Este primeiro diálogo entre eles abordou o uso da arte performativa como forma de contornar os aspectos comerciais e capitalistas do mundo da arte, o que permite a sua não mercantilização. Também falaram sobre a oportunidade que a PADA lhes proporcionou de experimentar um vasto leque de possibilidades. A conversa prosseguiu, falando sobre espontaneidade na criação artística, barreiras, identidade, ingredientes de comida como materiais artísticos, culminando no pensamento de comida como resistência.
