Lots of people have asked me
- What are these?
- What do they mean?
- What are they made of?
and
- How the heck do you pronounce 'talhakimt'?

I may have SOME answers for you:

The answer to the first question is, they are talhakimt (or tanfouk) - Tuareg pieces from north and west Africa.

And I usually pronounce it like this:
tahl'-ha-kimt
Three syllables, with the accent on the first syllable, and minimizing the second almost to the point of not saying it! This is the pronunciation I have heard most often from English speaking persons and thus why I pronounce it that way. Although this word is not originally an English word, so there are probably more ways of pronouncing it than there are of spelling it...
