The passing of knowledge is fundamental to the human experience and often our survival. I had the privilege of meeting who has made this endeavor her life’s work as of late, traveling to indigenous and rural communities in Columbia to teach the process of kiln construction and firing out of local materials. Maria was invited to Puerto Rico by by way of her residency with Alma possesses a deep understanding of foraging local clay, its properties and chemistry. Together they have set off to construct a downdraft adobe style orno. I was privileged enough to spend a day with them contributing a small part and receive their knowledge (and hope to go back for more if life/ time allows).
