𝑻𝒖𝒓𝒏-𝒐𝒇-𝒕𝒉𝒆-𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒚 women’s fashion saw a significant shift towards comfort and free movement as women began to join the workforce or engage activities such as cycling.
However, although skirts became flowing and less restrictive, corsets remained essential in shaping the fashionable hourglass and S-bend silhouette. Bodices were typically fitted and high-necked, often layered with jackets, and paired with sleeves that extended to the wrists.
In the early 𝟏𝟖𝟗𝟎𝐬, the puffed 𝐦𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐠 sleeve (a look I’m obsessed with!) came into vogue. Its dramatic volume increased throughout the decade, reaching its height around 𝟏𝟖𝟗𝟓 before gradually diminishing toward the end of the 1890s.
Feathers still remained a thing! They often adorned the hats of women from all social classes.
