Is it AI, or is it human?

[tekst w j.polskim w przypiętym komentarzu]

It is a question we hear every day now, as we search for truth among images we can no longer trust. Yet the camera was invented to capture photogénie, that mysterious quality that reveals what makes us human.

This is why the 21st edition of AfryKamera, the African Film Festival in Warsaw, has chosen Ubuntu, “I am because we are,” as its motto. It reminds us of the one thing no machine can reach: the light that shines in each of us and connects us to one another.

“I am because we are” travels north and finds a home in the land of the Imazighen, whose name means “the free people,” as we turn our focus to North African cinema, with a spotlight on Morocco: a crossroads of Africa, the Arab world and Europe, where mosques, synagogues and churches stand side by side, and where Amazigh, Arab, Jewish, Andalusian and sub-Saharan roots have long shared one home.

But Ubuntu knows no single region: from Nigeria and Ghana to Kenya, Cameroon and South Africa, this edition brings together voices from across the whole continent, because no part of Africa is whole without the others.

And here in Warsaw, Ubuntu meets a city that was rebuilt from ruins by its own people, in a country that won back its freedom by standing together. Poland knows that no one is free alone.

Yet to remember our freedom is also to remember our past. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, people from Africa and from colonised lands across the world were put on display in human zoos, behind fences, while crowds paid to look.

That history inspired the questions behind this year’s edition. The fences have fallen, but has the frame taken their place? Every image still decides who stands inside it and who stands outside, looking in. So we ask: who owns the gaze, and who surrenders it?

Czy to AI, czy człowiek?

[english down below]

Filmy, które wracają do archiwów, by odzyskać obrazy przeszłości.

Nasz konkurs pełnometrażowy łączy fabułę i dokument z całego kontynentu i spoza niego.

AfryGaze proponuje różnorodny przegląd afrykańskich perspektyw i nowych sposobów patrzenia. Animafrica, pierwszy w historii AfryKamery blok animacji.

AfryFutures, pozakonkursowy blok muzyczny, to miejsce, w którym dźwięk spotyka obraz filmowy.

Zapraszamy, by patrzeć, pytać i odnajdywać własne odpowiedzi.

Dwadzieścia jeden lat od założenia AfryKamera pozostaje jedynym w Polsce festiwalem poświęconym kinu afrykańskiemu. Istnieje dzięki wszystkim, którzy ją tworzą: filmowcom, partnerom, wolontariuszom i Wam, widzom. Jesteśmy, ponieważ Wy jesteście.

Witajcie na AfryKamerze 2026!

Is it AI, or is it human? It is a question we hear every day now, as we search for truth among images we can no longer trust. Yet the camera was invented to capture photogénie, that mysterious quality that reveals what makes us human.

This is why the 21st edition of AfryKamera, the African Film Festival in Warsaw, has chosen Ubuntu, “I am because we are,” as its motto. It reminds us of the one thing no machine can reach: the light that shines in each of us and connects us to one another.

With these questions in mind, we chose brave films. Films that create rupture and push against the fence. Films where women take back their bodies, their labour and their land. Films where genre, from horror to animation and satire, becomes a way to say what cannot be said directly. Films that return to the archive to reclaim images of the past. Films about young people refusing the place they were assigned. Music runs through this edition like a pulse, with many films devoted to musicians and voices that carried their people through occupation, apartheid and exile.

Our feature competition brings together fiction and documentary from across the continent and beyond. Our short film blocks each open their own window. AfryDaughters explores the bonds, and the distances, between parents and children. AfryZigh gathers voices from North Africa. AfryGaze offers a diverse slate of African perspectives and new ways of seeing. Animafrica, AfryKamera’s first-ever animation block from across the continent and beyond.

AfryFutures, a non-competitive music block, is where music meets the cinematic image. Our classics section looks back with films that shaped the way Africa sees itself, from science fiction to work by Moroccan alumni of the Łódź Film School, a quiet bridge between Poland and Morocco.

In a time when images can be generated without a single breath behind them, AfryKamera makes a simple promise. Every film in this programme was made by people, about people, for people. Behind each frame there is a hand, a voice, a risk taken. We invite you to watch, to question and to find your own answers.

Twenty-one years after its founding, AfryKamera remains Poland’s biggest festival dedicated to African cinema. It continues to exist because of everyone who makes it: filmmakers, partners, volunteers and you, the audience. We are, because you are.

Welcome to AfryKamera 2026!

Between the Atlas and Warsaw. We're unveiling the poster for the 21st AfryKamera! 🧡🖤

[tekst w języku polskim poniżej]

This year we invited Moroccan graphic artist Blizzart (Oussama Benjelloun) to create the poster.

In the artist's own words:

"Before viewers recognize the individual symbols, I want them to feel surprise and a raw, almost overwhelming force."

After that first wave of admiration, though, it's worth taking a closer look at the individual elements:

🧡 monumental female figure - inspired by depictions of Aisha Qandisha, a powerful and awe-inspiring female figure from Moroccan folklore, associated with water, as well as the Warsaw Mermaid and the monumental Nike.

🖤 crown - a silver headpiece with cones, drawing on the "Talgamut," an iconic element of traditional Amazigh jewelry from southern Morocco, which during the struggle against colonizers was used to smuggle gunpowder.

🧡 sash - inspired by Ghanaian Kente cloth, a symbol of independence, African pride, identity, and the Pan-African idea.

🖤 geometric marks - referencing Amazigh tattoos found across an area stretching from Morocco through Algeria and Tunisia to Saharan communities, including the Tuareg. They are associated, among other things, with the symbolism of femininity, protection, and the stars.

🧡 Atlas Mountains - a landscape tied to Blizzart's roots, as well as to the Amazigh tattoo tradition in the High and Middle Atlas regions.
And how does the artist himself describe his concept?

"I was intrigued by combining the female images of Nike, the Mermaid, and Aisha Qandisha. She becomes a meeting point of the Polish and Moroccan imagination.

For me, this woman embodies strength, independence, and a sense of community:

being yourself while belonging to something bigger. Her raised fist expresses strength and forward movement. The colorful sash, inspired by Ghanaian Kente cloth, extends this encounter beyond Morocco, evoking the spirit of Ubuntu: I am because we are.

Blizzart calls his practice "phygital art": it merges the digital and physical worlds, draws on Moroccan and Amazigh* heritage, and sets it alongside contemporary design, the language of science fiction, cyberpunk, and futuristic aesthetics.

You can find more of Blizzart's work on his Instagram: instagram.com/blizzart_

Keep an eye out for us around the city! 🧡

P.S. Blizzart was the first to show us the photo of Haiti's jerseys at the Football World Cup featuring a white-and-red flag, thus starting a dialogue about the interweaving of cultures and meanings.

*Amazigh (plural: Imazighen) are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa, from Morocco and Algeria to Tunisia, Libya, and the Sahara. In Poland they are often called Berbers, but this is an external term derived from the word "barbarian," which is why they prefer the name Amazigh, sometimes translated as "free person." They speak the Tamazight languages and use their own script, Tifinagh. In Morocco, Tamazight has been an official language since 2011.

Pomiędzy Atlasem a Warszawą. Ujawniamy plakat 21. AfryKamery! 🧡🖤

W tym roku zaprosiliśmy do stworzenia plakatu marokańskiego artystę grafika Blizzarta - Oussamę Benjellouna.

Jak mówi sam autor:

„Zanim odbiorcy rozpoznają poszczególne symbole, chcę, aby poczuli zaskoczenie i surową, niemal przytłaczającą siłę”.

🧡monumentalna kobieca postać - inspirowana wizerunkami Aishy Kandishy, potężnej i budzącej respekt kobiecej postaci z marokańskiego folkloru, związanej z wodą, Warszawskiej Syrenki i pomnikowej Nike.

Wiążą się m.in. z symboliką kobiecości, ochrony i gwiazd.

🧡Góry Atlasu - krajobraz związany z korzeniami Blizzarta, a także z tradycją tatuaży Amazigh w rejonie Atlasu Wysokiego i Średniego.

A jak o swojej koncepcji opowiada sam artysta?

„Zaintrygowało mnie połączenie kobiecych wizerunków Nike, Syrenki i Aishy Kandishy. Staje się ona punktem spotkania polskiej i marokańskiej wyobraźni.

Dla mnie ta kobieta uosabia siłę, niezależność i poczucie wspólnoty: bycie sobą, a jednocześnie przynależność do czegoś większego. Jej uniesiona pięść wyraża siłę i ruch do przodu. Kolorowa szarfa, inspirowana ghańską tkaniną Kente, poszerza to spotkanie poza Maroko, nawiązując do ducha Ubuntu: „Jestem, ponieważ jesteśmy”.

Mówią językami tamazight i używają własnego pisma tifinagh.

The 21st edition of AfryKamera opens under the theme "I am because we are."

[tekst w języku polskim poniżej]

This year, we are launching a three-year cycle inspired by the philosophy of Ubuntu, captured in the phrase "I am because we are." We believe that we become human not alone, but through our relationships with others: through hospitality, shared memory, care and a sense of responsibility for one another.

This idea guides us throughout the entire process of creating the festival, and you will experience it in tangible form during the screenings and accompanying events.

In the first chapter of the cycle, we focus on COMMUNITY, turning the lens to the cinema of North Africa and the Maghreb: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. It is cinema full of stories about migration, identity and memory.

The program will include meetings, conversations and dance, making the festival an open home for each and every one of us. We will revisit stories that connect generations, without shying away from the most pressing issues: anti-racism, decolonization and feminism.

For twenty-one years, we have been creating the festival together with you: our audience members, artists and volunteers. Without you, there would be no AfryKamera! ❤️

Tomorrow we will announce the call for volunteers. And if you want to stay up to date, join this event AfryKamera 2026: I Am Because We Are - African Film Festival Warsaw and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Important dates:

🔻 October 15: volunteer applications open
🔻 October 23: ticket sales start and program announcement
🔻 November 23-29: festival in Warsaw

A slowly unfolding reveal of this year's poster, designed by Ania Stępień.

Ta myśl przyświeca nam podczas całego procesu tworzenia festiwalu, a w zmaterializowanej formie doświadczycie jej podczas seansów i wydarzeń towarzyszących.

W pierwszej odsłonie cyklu uwagę poświęcamy WSPÓLNOCIE kierując soczewkę na kino Afryki Północnej i Maghrebu: Maroka, Algierii, Tunezji i Libii. To kino pełne opowieści o migracji, tożsamości i pamięci.

Bez Was nie byłoby AfryKamery! ❤️

Już jutro ogłosimy nabór na wolontariat. A jeśli chcecie być na bieżąco, dołączcie do nas AfryKamera 2026: I Am Because We Are - African Film Festival Warsaw i obserwujcie nas na facebooku oraz instagramie.

Ważne daty:

🔻 15.10: rozpoczynamy nabór na wolontariuszy
🔻 23.10: start sprzedaży biletów i ogłoszenie programu
🔻 23-29.11: festiwal w Warszawie

‼️ 1,5% to mały gest.

I siedemnaście odmów.

To nasze dziedzictwo, nasza tożsamość i nasza przyszłość.

W formularzu PIT wpisz KRS 0000270261 z celem szczegółowym: FUNDACJA FILMGRAMM 13372

Jesteśmy podopiecznymi Fundacji Studenckiej Młodzi - Młodym.

To nic Was nie kosztuje.

💛

Jeśli chcielibyśmy 1,5% wesprzeć kulturę i LGBTQ+ za jednym zamachem - polecamy!
