Zaprosił ją w Warszawie na kawę. Odmówiła — „czeka na mnie koleżanka”. Dopiero później dowiedziała się, kim był ten elegancki pan.
Późne lata 60. Pani Marianna Oliwiak jechała autobusem z Lublina do Warszawy, z upchanym pod siedzeniem zwiniętym, niepozornym kilimem, który wiozła do Cepelii. Elegancki nieznajomy usiadł koło niej i rozmawiali całą drogę, ale o tym, co wiezie, nie powiedziała mu ani słowa. „Nie przyznałam się, że mam dywan obok upakowany”.
Na dworcu zaprosił ją na kawę. „Dziękuję bardzo za dobre chęci, ale nie pójdę”, odpowiedziała. „Pani się boi?” — zapytał. „Nie. Koleżanka na mnie czeka”. Zamówiła taksówkę i pojechała do znajomej, która studiowała w stolicy.
Dopiero potem okazało się, że jej elegancki towarzysz podróży był znanym redaktorem sportowym.

He invited her for coffee in Warsaw. She declined — “a friend is waiting for me.” Only later did she learn who the elegant gentleman was.
Late 60. Marianna Oliwiak was travelling by bus from Lublin to Warsaw, her kilim wrapped, unremarkable, and pushed out of sight beneath the seat. An elegant stranger took the place beside her and they talked the whole way; yet of what she was carrying she breathed not a word. “I never let on that I had a kilim packed up beside me.”
At the station he invited her for coffee. “Thank you kindly for the thought, but I can’t” she replied. “Are you afraid?” he asked. “No. A friend is waiting for me.” She called a taxi and went to her friend, who was studying in Warsaw.
Only afterwards did it emerge that her elegant travelling companion was a well-known sports journalist.
