Przed każdym spektaklem Pieśni Czarnych Niewolników dokładamy najwyższej staranności, aby widz miał możliwość głębiej poznać kontekst niewolnictwa w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Na uczestników czekają bezpłatne, wielostronicowe foldery przybliżające złożoną i bolesną historię Afroamerykanów do roku 1865. Zawierają one zarówno komentarze badaczy, jak i informacje o powstaniu spektaklu.
Przed rozpoczęciem przedstawienia publiczność ma okazję zobaczyć wysokiej jakości reprodukcje przejmujących fotografii z Biblioteki Kongresu w Waszyngtonie, ukazujących realia systemu niewolniczego w USA. Jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem spektaklu, gdy publiczność gromadzi się na widowni, przestrzeń wypełniają archiwalne nagrania z początków XX wieku – świadectwa opowieści i śpiewów ludzi urodzonych w niewoli.
Sam spektakl nie jest jednak rekonstrukcją cierpienia, lecz celebracją życia i siły ducha Czarnych Niewolników – manifestacją ich niezłomności, wiary i inteligencji. Przez całość przedstawienia przemawia jedynie śpiew a ca****la: harmonia głosów wykonujących starannie dobrane pieśni Negro Spiritual, które tworzą opowieść o drodze – od dramatycznego porwania w Afryce po historyczne zniesienie niewolnictwa w 1865 roku wraz z uchwaleniem 13. poprawki do Konstytucji Stanów Zjednoczonych.

Before each performance of Songs of Black Slaves, we take the utmost care to provide the audience with an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the history of slavery in the United States. Visitors receive complimentary, multi-page booklets that present the complex and painful story of African Americans up to 1865. These materials include scholarly introductions as well as information about the production itself.
Before the performance begins, the audience is invited to view high-quality reproductions of poignant photographs from the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., depicting the realities of the slave system in the United States. Even before the show starts, as the audience gathers in the hall, the space is filled with archival recordings from the early 20th century – living testimonies of the stories and songs of people born in slavery.
The performance itself is not a reconstruction of suffering, but rather a celebration of the lives and the indomitable spirit of the Black Slaves – a manifestation of their resilience, faith, and intelligence. Throughout the entire performance, only a ca****la voices are heard: harmonies of carefully chosen Negro Spirituals, shaping a narrative that traces the journey from the traumatic abduction in Africa to the historic abolition of slavery in 1865 with the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
