“But it was just too damn cold”.

We are thrilled to extend Levi van Gelder’s exhibition Ötza, Offshore curated by Kuba Bąk until February 28th.

On this occasion we are also spreading the word about Kuba Bąk’s Tour which will take place on February 15th Sunday at 6 PM.

“CHAPTER 7
The Prehistoric Hut: Seasonal Enterprises at the Open Air Museum for Natural History in Santa Ana
Ötza was always cold when doing her shift in the prehistoric hut. A weird draft always pushed through the wicker rooftop, which seemed permanently chilly no matter the season. Even when the scorching sun of LA summer seemed but a degree away from lighting the little hut ablaze—like a puny ant being burned alive by an evil tax-avoidant toddler with a magnifying glass—even then the steamy air would filter through the faux-neolithic thatch, and come out magically freezing on the other side.
She sat on a low foldable stool, low enough for it to be invisible if she crossed her legs, so people would think she was sitting on the floor like a real hutdweller. She reluctantly zipped up her hoodie a little bit higher. She preferred to have it open, because she was wearing her favorite t-shirt underneath. But it was just too damn cold.”

UPDATE (c u at skala)
Ötza in conversation with Andrzej Marzec
December 7, Sunday 6 PM
at galeria skala

Ötza is a Neolithic mummy who, in her artistic practice, tries to connect the worlds of fan fiction and entrepreneurship. Her signature features are her long blonde hair (briefly replaced by a platinum bob in chapter III), her natural lip flip, and her pronounced thigh gap, regardless of her age and the increasingly hard-to-hide traces of decay on her complexion. Equally fascinating are her fan fiction pieces, in which Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte meet semantics, and a post-Marxist, posthumanist revolt takes on a mute form in a yogic silent retreat inspired by the magazine Tiqqun.
Ötza fights the regime of truth in her work, in her biography, and in courtrooms alike. After a not-too-successful trial for tax fraud and copyright infringement, she does not cease searching for ancillary incomes and tax havens. While the richest 1% tend to place their assets in Caribbean companies and offshore funds, the mummy, who must spend a significant part of her time in a cryogenic chamber, looks for colder places. Perhaps the journey to this tax Arcadia, which is just beginning at Poznań’s galeria skala, will one day end in her own museum in a fiscally friendly Swiss village nestled among Alpine glaciers.

Free-drifters

skala, Poznań
August 3–30.2025

In the circulation of art, the biographies of artworks are in constant flux—shaped by time, technological shifts, conservation practices, and institutional recontextualizations. Objects lose their original intentionality and acquire a new ontological status: they become emergent entities operating according to their own autonomous, often unpredictable logic. Free-drifters examines three such cases—narratives of objects and artistic intentions—by analyzing mechanisms of presence, memory, and agency that spreads into forms of growths and sprouts.

Galeria skala is thrilled to present a selection of films by Agnieszka Polska.

Agnieszka Polska creates films and video installations using archival or stock materials, employing animation techniques and artificial intelligence. In her work, she focuses on contemporary humans, entangled in a constant flow of information, whose everyday lives are shaped by technological and economic progress and the resulting climatic, political, and social crises.

Polska draws on philosophy, cognitive and social sciences, and cybernetics to explore the relationship between the individual and the surrounding world – sometimes a world supervised and regulated by technology, sometimes a world of blooming flowers.

Agnieszka Polska (1985, Lublin) studied at the Faculty of Arts at UMCS in Lublin (2004–2005), at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (2005–2010), and at the University of the Arts in Berlin (2008–2009). She is the winner of the Preis der Nationalgalerie award (2017) and the third edition of the Film Award (2013) granted by the Polish Film Institute, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, and the Wajda School.

“I Am Only What You Made Me”*

screening program: September 5—20, 2025
Thursday—Saturday 11—4

Last three days (Thursday—Saturday, 18—20.9) of skala’s screening room “I Am Only What You Made Me,” with works by Ian Cheng, Mark Leckey, Hanna Lidén, Klara Lidén, and Michael E. Smith. The gallery has been fully transformed into a cinema–concert hall, evoking two parallel experiences separated by more than a century: one at Manhattan’s Grand Opera House—often cited as an early proto–music-video encounter—and the other in countless teenage rooms, where shared sessions unfolded before a computer screen, hypnotised by the interplay of sound and image.
