ANIMO derives from the Latin anima and animus – an impulse, vital energy, a life-giving force.
The puppeteer-nomad wanders with stories, carrying theatre in their hands, in their luggage, in their heart. They travel across cities and continents, languages and cultures, to breathe life into matter and mark their presence wherever they go.
As we celebrate the International Day of Puppetry, we hope that puppets will never cease to speak with our shared voice. May they bring to life stories that connect generations and cultures; may these stories build bridges between tradition and the future. May every performance be a celebration of encounter, and every gesture of animation an act of hope and community.
With our festival enthusiasm and international energy, we wish you a world full of imagination. For this occasion, we are sharing the official message for International Puppetry Day 2026, written by the Malian master puppeteer Yaya Coulibaly.
It is a moving reflection on the puppet as a vessel of memory, identity and the light of life – an art form that has helped people understand the world and themselves for centuries. Dear friends, puppeteers – happy International Puppetry Day!
"World Puppetry Day is a celebration of the light of life."
“[…] Reviving our past, showcasing puppetry, an important element of the world’s cultural heritage, is not only a scientific endeavour, but also a testament to intelligence and self-love.
The subject is not new, but it remains a powerful one.
In this kind of theatre, where everyone plays a double game, even a man from an excellent social background cannot escape the moral consequences of the puppet’s actions.
The play of the puppets offers a fascinating glimpse into the spirit of the times: the people are the true heroes of this theatre, embodying the joy of living and simple pleasures.
The unique beauty of the puppet, its rich and varied theatre and music, its songs and dances — reflecting an authentic civilisation and ancestral beliefs — constitute an enormous source of inspiration for theatre professionals, and especially for young people engaged in the process of developing a universal culture. […] The puppet is a mirror of our cultural identity, a springboard for the blossoming of our art and culture, an irreplaceable framework for the affirmation of our creative genius. This is why the Art of puppetry must be shared. […]”
