🏛️ ACSI 2026 & MEMPOP: A Dispatch from the Mnemonic Front

Ljubljana has not yet fully recovered from an exceptionally dense week of critical inquiry, collective memory work, and cultural interventions, which transformed the city into a hub for over 100 researchers from 30+ institutions.

The Week in Review:
• Theoretical Foundations: Plenaries by David Mwambari (KU Leuven) and Madina Tlostanova (Linköping University), alongside a conversation with Lawrence Grossberg on the “future tense” of our discipline.
• Scholarly Exchange & Methodological Deep-Dives: 5 workshops and 12+ panels dissecting decolonization, the mnemonic lives of pop culture, and the challenges of situated fieldwork.
• Cinematic & Visual Interventions: The three-day program Commons on the Horizon at Slovenska kinoteka and our guided graffiti tours explored the post-Yugoslav landscape as a living map of experience.
• Sonic Aftermath: We closed the week with Nimaš Izbire X MEMPOP: Ljubljanacore, where academic discourse lost its form in the vibrant chaos of the local underground.

As a thank you to all the presenters, participants, organizers, and those who offered support from all directions, we will be releasing a series of posts and stories highlighting key moments from the week.

🔊 ACSI 2026 Finale: Nimaš Izbire X MEMPOP: Ljubljanacore 🐉

To mark the conclusion of the Final MEMPOP Conference and the Association for Cultural Studies Institute 2026, we are handing over the reins to the Nimaš Izbire collective. Tonight, KUD Channel Zero features a 'pink selection' of local pioneers and international agents of chaos.

The Lineup:
🎸 Iza Napotnik – A "young soul" of grunge melancholy.
🎤 Veselko – The rising star of Ljubljana's new-gen hip-hop underground.
🔥 Balans – Ljubljana’s post-punk favorites announce their highly anticipated comeback.
🌀 Oliver Torr – Returning to Ljubljana from Athens, the Czech "musical hacker" and multidisciplinary anarchist.

🎧 warm-up and afterparty sets by the collective’s seasoned DJs, accompanied by signature visual interventions from the NI design team.

📽️ Special Opening: Ideologies of the Visual

Tonight's program begins at 20:00 with a series of student presentations—a project now in its fourth year within Kulturologija program at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences. As part of 'the Ideologies of the Visual course', Ema Levec, Špela Pečjak, Tjaša Pintar, and Ivan Slijepčević will share their dissections of selected music videos.

Today’s Association for Cultural Studies Institute program shifts gears. We are starting our short film selection earlier than usual to make room for a night that will likely bleed into the early morning hours.

Starting at 17.00, we present two screenings on the burdens of war:

🎬 Exit Through the Cuckoo's Nest [Izlaz kroz ludaru], 2024 | Nikola Ilić
A soldier’s refusal to pull the trigger leads him on a surreal detour through military prison and a lunatic asylum. He arrives home in Belgrade just as the NATO bombing begins.

🎬The Load [Teret], 2018 | Ognjen Glavonić
1999. A truck with unknown cargo travels from Kosovo to Belgrade through a war-ravaged landscape. This unique road movie breaks twenty years of silence surrounding horrific crimes, exposing the weight a generation has quietly placed on the shoulders of its children.

🎥 Tonight at Slovenska kinoteka: today's program continues to explore the post-Yugoslav cinematic landscape - a map of memory and a shared space for personal and collective experience.

Series of short films at 18:00:

1. Line Rider, 2023 | Simon Intihar

Boštjan Čadež is a "mad genius" of art and robotics, but can he conquer the legacy of his own generation-defining video game? A study of creativity, fame, and the fine line of self-destruction.

2. Microcassette – The Smallest Cassette I’ve Ever Seen [Mikrokazeta - najmanja kazeta koju sam ikad video], 2020 | Igor Bezinović

A discarded object found in a landfill on Lošinj becomes a portal. A profound tribute to chance, imagination, and the stories we find in the garbage heaps of history.

3. Valerija, 2022 | Sara Jurinčić

What does a family tree look like when it consists only of women? A hybrid documentary where reality and the subconscious merge, listening to the whispers of silent female ancestors.

4. Like a Sick Yellow [Si e verdhë e sëmurë], 2024 | Norika Sefa

An immersion into the tangled web of memory. Intertwining the beautiful and the tragic, Nora’s recollections mingle until something entirely new—and haunting—is formed.

5. Wild Flowers [Divlje cvijeće], 2022 | Karla Crnčević

A father used a camera only once in his life. Thirty years later, he asks for the VHS to be digitized. A delicate exploration of what remains in the frame and what is lost to time.

6. Peacemaker [Mirotvorac], 2025 | Ivan Ramljak

A meticulous archival reconstruction of the voice of reason amid the growing conflicts of 1991. Was Josip Reihl-Kir, the man of dialogue, silenced by the hawks of nationalism?

🧠 Od danes do petka, 𝟮𝟰. 𝗮𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗮, prihaja na spored program, posvečen postjugoslovanski filmski krajini kot zemljevidu spomina ter prostora osebnih in kolektivnih izkušenj, ki raziskuje pozabljene dosežke nekdanje skupne države in kaže na njene nezaceljene travme.

🚂 Ostružke podob preteklosti kot opomina za prihodnost bomo danes ob 𝟭𝟴. 𝘂𝗿𝗶 začeli raziskovati prek dveh filmov: 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗼 (Želimir Žilnik, 1975) pripoveduje zgodbo o srbskem delavcu, ki se z vlakom iz Münchna odpravi na jug; raziskovalni esej 𝗝𝘂𝗴𝗼𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗷𝗮, 𝗸𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝗷𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗷𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘀̌𝗲 𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗸𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗼 (Marta Popivoda, 2013) pa se ukvarja z vprašanjem manifestiranja ideologije v javnem prostoru skozi množične performanse.

Now that the Final MEMPOP Conference is behind us, we want to thank everyone who made it possible. To our presenters for their insights, to the audience—both the vocal question-askers and the silently curious—and especially to our young fellow researchers from the Centre and our students, whose support was felt in every corner of the event.

1. Farewell [Abschied], 1975 | Želimir Žilnik

After five years on the BMW assembly line, a worker from Serbia stands at a Munich railway station, preparing for his journey south. In Žilnik’s raw, observational style, the protagonist reflects on the impressions and habits acquired within the machinery of Western industry.

2. Yugoslavia, How Ideology Moved Our Collective Body, 2013 | Marta Popivoda

Popivoda explores the manifestation of ideology in public space through mass performance. By analyzing archival footage from 1945 to 2000—ranging from youth work brigades and May Day parades to the student protests of '68 and the revolution of 2000—the film reconstructs the gradual erosion of communist ideology.

3. Stitch the Ruin [Zašij ruševinu], 2024 | Željka Blašić

Stitch the Ruin weaves together microscopic views of used textiles, focusing on the intimate details of stitching and tags. Blašić explores labor, time, and the socialist "structure of feeling" shaped by workers.

4. Blum – Masters of Their Own Destiny [Blum - Gospodari svoje budučnosti], 2024 | Jasmila Žbanić

A portrait of Emerik Blum, the visionary founder of the Sarajevo-based giant Energoinvest. Under Blum’s leadership, a war-devastated city was transformed into an industrial powerhouse through a unique model that fused socialist planned economy with Western logic. Žbanić’s film is not just a biography of a philanthropist and leader; it is a call to action and an argument for a more humane attitude toward the working class.

🚧 Workshop Spotlight: Monuments, Murals, and Minefields – Researching Post-Conflict Sites of Memory

Since the program kicks off tomorrow—with the first two days dedicated to the Final MEMPOP Conference—it is only fitting to conclude our promotion with the final ACSI 2026 workshop, led by Vjeran Pavlakovic and Benedikt Perak.

Drawing from a variety of case studies collected through Southeast European research initiatives and projects linked to MEMPOP (such as Slow Memory and FRAMNAT), this workshop offers a "behind-the-scenes" look at the realities of ethnographic fieldwork:
🔹 Essential aspects of fieldwork in contested landscapes.
🔹 The ethical challenges of researching sites of trauma.
🔹 Strategies for managing and analyzing materials once the fieldwork concludes.

Additionally, the workshop will demonstrate how digital tools can support the documentation and dissemination of research on post-conflict sites of memory. 💻🏛️

🔍 Panel Spotlight: Mnemonic Lives and Afterlives in/of Yugoslav Socialist Popular Culture

Ethnographic research – here conjoined with archival and hermeneutic methods – serves as the common denominators of this conference panel. Its interdisciplinary framework aims to capture the heterogeneous fragments of media forms, politics, and infrastructures that shaped Yugoslav popular culture, ranging from childhood memories of leisure to the monumentalized legacy of the Partisan national liberation forces. 📂✊

A widely discussed case study in this mnemonic landscape is the legacy of Jugoplastika. While Yugoslav youth may have appeared uniform in their school bags, jackets, and rubber sandals, these mass-produced items were part of a complex industrial and cultural web.

You can catch Fedja’s presentation on Day1, where she will share her ethnographic study of aquatic creatures, merging film analysis with a psychoanalytic perspective. Sea monsters might seem predictably gendered at first—think of the lack of male mermaids in folk tales—but their bodies tell a different story. 🧜‍♂️💧

By navigating the liminal space between land and water, human and inhuman, aquatic monsters dissolve the rigid boundaries of our world. They aren't just 'creatures'; they can serve as a heuristic tool for understanding gender, memory, and identification today. In these fluid, liminal beings, the q***r runs deep. 🌊
