‘Las Meninas’ is the most famous work by Spanish Baroque painter Diego Velázquez. It is known for its complexity and is viewed as one of the most important paintings of Western art history.
The complexity lays in the uncertain relationship between the viewer, us, and the subjects in the painting — the court of Spain in the 17th century. At the center stands the young Infanta Margarita, surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting. To the left, Velázquez himself stands behind a large canvas, brush in hand. And in the mirror on the back wall, the King and Queen of Spain are reflected — standing exactly where we stand.
And isn’t that amazing? That we are somewhat included in the painting, and in world history.

Schenk painted this painting in 1878 and in 1885 he reversed the scene (picture 2). Both heartbreaking.

In 1889, newlyweds Marie and P.S Krøyer celebrated their love with a honeymoon trip to Italy. Their journey led them to the charming town of Ravello, a place that likely served as the setting for their collaborative double portrait. She painted him and vice versa.
The couple would eventually be a part of the Skagen Painters, a group of Scandinavian artists who gathered in the village of Skagen.
Even though Marie Krøyer was a painter in her own right, she felt that her talent was inferior to her husbands and accepted that her role was to be a housewife and mother.
It was not until the death of her daughter Vibeke in 1986 that her talents as an artist were revealed. The paintings left by Vibeke, now in , showed her mother was a fine painter who had possessed the unrealized potential to become one of Skagen’s leading artists.
The 2012 film ”The Passion of Marie” depicts the life of Marie Krøyer and stormy relationship between the two painters.

Ludwig Deutsch was born in Vienna in 1855 but built his career in Paris, where he became a well-known name within Orientalist painting. He studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and developed a style defined by precision and carefully staged compositions. His works often return to recurring figures like guards, scholars, and quiet interior scenes, set against richly detailed architecture. Deutsch did travel to Egypt, which informed parts of his work, though many paintings were completed in the studio. Today, his art is often discussed in relation to Orientalism, where non-European cultures were depicted through a European lens, something that can feel complex to look at with modern eyes. At the same time, it’s hard not to be struck by the sheer beauty and technical skill in his paintings.
