Chinese artist 艺术家 comments on our times by recreating some of the most famous paintings in art history. Today’s world leaders and dictators become the card players in Georges de La Tour’s “The Card Sharp with the Ace of Diamonds”, while Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei takes the place of Jean-Paul Marat in Jacques-Louis David’s “The Death of Marat”. Like them or not, Su Yu’s paintings definitely stir up emotions. How many of the original paintings do you recognize without swiping? ✍🏻

A Swedish painter who studied under Paul Gauguin in Paris, then returned home and found his own language in the landscapes of northern Sweden.
His colors are what always get me. So autumny, so bold, so strange, and somehow completely natural at the same time.

On this day in 2023, Fernando Botero died at the age of 91. He became famous for his distinctive use of exaggerated volume, painting people, animals and objects with unusually large, rounded forms, a style often referred to as “Boterismo”. Although he spent much of his adult life outside Colombia, his connection to his home country remained strong and Colombian life appeared throughout his work. In 2000, he donated more than 200 works to Bogotá, a gift that laid the foundation for the Museo Botero, and also made a major donation to the Museo de Antioquia in his hometown of Medellín.
