Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci (c. 1489–1490).
A portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, the young mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan.

The ermine she holds? A symbol of purity and a clever reference to Ludovico, whose emblem was the ermine itself.

Painted in Milan, this masterpiece now lives at the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków, Poland.

Yayoi Kusama’s iconic polka dots are inspired by a hallucination she experienced while looking at a tablecloth as a child - “One day I was looking at the red flower patterns of the tablecloth on a table, and when I looked up I saw the same pattern covering the ceiling, the windows and the walls, and finally all over the room, my body and the universe, I felt as if I had begun to self-obliterate, to revolve in the infinity of endless time and the absoluteness of space.”

Yves Klein (1928-1962) was the most influential, prominent, and controversial French artist to emerge in the 1950s. He is remembered above all for his use of a single color, the rich shade of ultramarine that he made his own: International Klein Blue (IKB).

In his most renowned series, Anthropométries, the French artist invited naked female models to cover themselves in blue paint and imprint their bodies onto canvas.

Some of these paintings were created in front of a live audience, the most infamous performance being on 9 March 1960 at the Galerie Internationale d’Art Contemporain in Paris. Few witnessed the event, but rumours of its scandalous display of nudity shocked the French establishment and cemented Klein’s reputation as a provocateur.
