Chosen,

The cover image for the upcoming issue of UNSTAGED, even though the Open Call - Mixed Media, curated by Dani (.m.terblanche ) - will remain open until June 15.

The cover work is by Lisa Murray, from the project This Too Shall Pass (2025–2026), a profoundly personal meditation on depletion, medication, presence, and absence.

Lisa constructs fragments of digital, analogue, new, and archival imagery, and interlaces scanned objects with binary notation, which mirrors the unstable rhythm of the body and the systems.

There are still many weeks ahead before the issue takes shape in full. But this image already felt impossible to ignore.

I connected with Chris Mclean, founder of The Humber Portrait Prize 2026, and it was a thoughtful conversation, as Chris’s photographic and organizational practice carries a rare sensitivity.

The Humber Portrait Prize 2026 is now open - and open to all this year, with no geographical restrictions. Portraits tell us who we are, and who we think we are. The prize is interested in work that holds attention, reveals something, or simply refuses to sit still.

Open Award and Student / Young Person categories.
Submissions are now live via Humberlands (www.humberlands.co.uk)
Deadline: June 5th, 2026.

Last year’s winners:

Humberlands is supported by the University of the Arts London (). Through education and research, Humberlands address the societal issues of our time with courage and imagination, transforming the world into a more equitable place.

This connection came through Amanda Crawley Jackson, and I’m genuinely grateful for that.

ISSUE 03 — throwback

"Rooms of Wonder is a photographic descent into interior territories, inspired by the tradition of historical cabinets of curiosities. Here, the cabinet is no longer understood as a physical or architectural space, but as a psychological chamber where fragments of dreams, fears, desires, memories, and disjointed narratives come together," Pelly writes.

Author: Pelly Mendreka

ISSUE 03 — throwback

"The brain does not fully distinguish between real and imagined experience, as both are processed and felt in similar ways. In that sense, dreams are not outside of life, but part of it," Nova Doria writes.

Theme: Materiality

Chris May’s The Cyanosphere Series immediately evokes a forgotten era of speculative inquiries of gentleman scientists and amateur cosmologists trying to map the invisible.

As May writes, these images are “illustrations of an imaginary science, visual representations of the unseeable.” The photographs appear almost empirical at first glance, as if they document some scientific phenomenon. But the deeper one enters the work, the more unstable that certainty becomes. “There is nothing empirical here, only subjective,” he writes.

The work constantly invites understanding, only to withdraw it again.

This time, the cover image itself will be authored by the guest curator. I was genuinely pleased that Ben Osborne agreed, as it was not an easy choice. With that in mind, I’d kindly ask everyone submitting work to include at least one vertically formatted image that could serve as a cover photo.

As you can see, the back cover continues a visual approach I’ve been developing for some time now: it repeats the front cover image, but with the main element removed; in this case, the absence of the bird symbolically reflects the theme of impermanence.

I should also mention that these disappearing elements on the back covers are generated using Nano Banana, an AI engine. Personally, I have no issue with creating through AI, as long as the author is transparent about using the technology.

Speaking of AI, I will soon be very pleased to announce a new Open Call curated by Kostis Argyriadis (), inviting submissions of AI-generated works that resemble photography.

To conclude, UNSTAGED is increasingly moving toward the territory of a research lab, with a particularly exciting collaboration on the horizon with Amanda Crawley Jackson (), Professor of Place & Culture and Dean of Research & Knowledge Exchange at the University of the Arts London.

Pelly Mandreka's project will be featured in Issue 03.

The following images are from Pelly's ongoing project "Rooms Of Wonder." She writes: "It's a visual wander in the psychic cabinets of the unconscious; the mind on display."

Issue 03 will be a special edition, devoted entirely to women’s stories at the edge of autobiographical psychology.
