Stereo Mastering or Stem Mastering?

One is not automatically better than the other.

The best choice depends on what your track actually needs.

I published a practical guide for producers, artists and labels who want to choose the right mastering route before release.

What 5 years of professional mastering taught me.

Not from theory only — but from constant ear training, daily decisions and learning how digital and analog processing react together.

5 things that were not so obvious at the beginning:

1. My ATC 50 + F12 monitoring is calibrated around 76 dB SPL for most mastering decisions.
2. The first session has to be short — usually no longer than 20 minutes.
3. The second session works best with a fresh mind, around 83 dB SPL, for about 15 minutes.
4. Calibration is the key to repeatable masters and faster detection of problems.
5. Reference tracks are not for copying. They help define the vision, balance and final destination of the track — between the artist’s intention and where the record needs to live.

Mastering is not only tools.

It is hearing relationships between decisions.
Digital, analog, room, level, time and perspective.

Reference tracks are not for copying.

They help define the direction of the master — energy, balance, low-end weight, loudness, stereo focus and release context.

The goal is not to make your track sound like someone else.

The goal is to understand where the final master should go, while keeping the identity of your music.

Before mastering, the premaster matters.

Limiter off.
Clean headroom.
No unwanted clipping.
Kick, bass and sub checked.
References ready.
Release goal clear.

A good premaster does not need to be loud.

It needs to be ready for mastering.

Before mastering, the premaster matters.

Limiter off. Clean headroom. No unwanted clipping. References ready. Release goal clear.

A better premaster gives more space for better final mastering decisions.

A release-ready master is not only about the sound.

The final delivery matters too.

Different platforms, distributors, labels and playback contexts may require different file formats and versions.

That is why final files should be prepared clearly — with proper formats, clean naming and a final check before delivery.

Mastering is the final sound decision.
Delivery is the final release handoff.

Before you send your track to mastering, check the premaster first.

Turn off the limiter.
Leave clean headroom.
Avoid unwanted clipping.
Check kick, bass and sub.
Prepare 1–2 references.

A better premaster gives more space for better final decisions.

A track can sound good in one room and still lose power outside of it.

That is why club translation is such an important part of electronic music mastering.

The lowest range needs the most accurate control — not only in frequency balance, but also in dynamics, movement and how the kick, bass and sub react under pressure.

If the low-end is too loose, the track loses weight.
If it is too compressed, the groove loses movement.
If it is not controlled, the master may feel loud, but it will not hold properly on a club system.

Good in the studio is not enough.

The track has to hold across real playback systems.

A track can sound good in your studio and still lose power outside your room.

Club translation depends on low-end pressure, punch, stereo focus and controlled loudness.

Black View Studio prepares electronic music for release-ready impact across club, streaming and label systems.
