On the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, the Delhi Gate in Lahore holds special significance as it marks the celebration of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ). This day is observed with great reverence and festivity. The Delhi Gate and its surrounding areas are beautifully decorated with colorful banners, lights, and flags.
In Androon Lahore (the Walled City), the celebration of Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ is particularly grand. Houses, shops, and mosques are adorned with lights and decorations. A large procession (Juloos) often starts from Delhi Gate, with people joining in to honor the Prophet ﷺ. Participants recite Naats (praise of the Prophet ﷺ), Durood o Salaam (salutations), and express their devotion as the procession moves through various parts of the city.
The procession passes through different streets and culminates at key religious or historical sites in Lahore. On this day, special gatherings of Naat recitals, religious sermons, and discussions on the life of the Prophet ﷺ are organized around Delhi Gate. Additionally, many locals set up stalls to offer free food and drink (Sabheel) and distribute charity in the form of Niyaz (offering food).
This day is of great spiritual and cultural significance for the Muslim community, and the celebrations in and around Delhi Gate highlight the city's deep connection to Islamic traditions.
