مسلمانوں کے عقیدہ کے مطابق ختم نبوت سے مراد یہ ہے کہ حضور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اللہ تعالٰیٰ کے آخری نبی اور آخری رسول ہیں۔ اللہ رب العزت نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو اس جہاں میں بھیج کر بعثت انبیا کا سلسلہ ختم فرما دیا ہے۔ اب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے بعد کوئی نبی مبعوث نہیں ہوگا۔ حضور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی ختم نبوت کا ذکر قرآن حکیم کی 100 سے بھی زیادہ آیات میں نہایت ہی جامع انداز میں صراحت کے ساتھ کیا گیا ہے ارشادِ خداوندی ہے:

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًاo (الاحزاب، 33 : 40)
