Freewheeling Featured Album - Mdou Moctar "Afrique Victime."
If you listen to one world music album this year, this should be it. Moctar is a Tuareg musician from Niger who largely sings in his native Tamashek, but when you play guitar like he does, the language is universal. He may not be known to most mainstream listeners, but Moctar is one of the most respected guitarists in the world right now carrying on the fine tradition of regional desert blues legends like the late great Ali Farka Toure, and the Malian Turaeg band Tinariwen, about whom I'm waxed eloquent many a times.
This album is electrifying, explosive, incendiary and uncontainable - it simply blows you away with its intensity. The fluidity with which the band play is mesmerizing and it doesn't matter that you don't understand the words. From the opening track Chismiten to the glorious climax of Bismilahi Ataghi, there are grooves that suck you in built around Moctar's fiery, searing solos.
Standout tracks - well, pretty much every single one :).
