One of my New Year's Resolutions was to not only save my radio show playlists on Spotify (something I've been very lax in doing), but also to share them. And to share new music that I'm listening to.

I wasn't very good about this the first couple of weeks, but finally put this into motion with Sunday's show. So here goes... click on the link to play.

Freewheeling playlist from Sunday, July 3
A whirlwind world tour with the first 3 tracks from Mali, Czech Republic, and New Zealand respectively. Followed by a blast of punk, your usual eclectic stuff - including a trio of songs from bands with names inspired by dinosaurs ('cause, why not?) before we bow out with some blissed out grooves.

Last Sunday was Glastonbury weekend - with the festival returning after a 2 year, COVID-induced hiatus.

And what an absolutely legendary return it was with hundreds of acts performing on various stages around the Worthy Farm venue.

Freewheeling was there in spirit, and here's the playlist featuring some of the acts who performed over the weekend.

Freewheeling Featured Album - Mdou Moctar "Afrique Victime."

If you listen to one world music album this year, this should be it. Moctar is a Tuareg musician from Niger who largely sings in his native Tamashek, but when you play guitar like he does, the language is universal. He may not be known to most mainstream listeners, but Moctar is one of the most respected guitarists in the world right now carrying on the fine tradition of regional desert blues legends like the late great Ali Farka Toure, and the Malian Turaeg band Tinariwen, about whom I'm waxed eloquent many a times.

This album is electrifying, explosive, incendiary and uncontainable - it simply blows you away with its intensity. The fluidity with which the band play is mesmerizing and it doesn't matter that you don't understand the words. From the opening track Chismiten to the glorious climax of Bismilahi Ataghi, there are grooves that suck you in built around Moctar's fiery, searing solos.

Standout tracks - well, pretty much every single one :).

The featured album on last Sunday's (May 23) Freewheeling was 'Walking Like We DO,' the sophomore offering from UK all-female indie rockers The Big Moon; the follow-up to their Mercury prize nominated debut 'Love in the 4th Dimension.'

Side A is irrepressible, Side B slightly more modest in comparison. The band are at their best when they're upbeat and boisterous - the wit is sparkly and self-deprecating masking a deeper anxiety, the guitars flash and chime. The album does have a poppier sound than its predecessor but the overall vibe is of progress and evolution. It's going to be interesting to follow this band, particularly frontwoman Juliette Jackson, and track their journey.

Absolutely fantastic album on today's Freewheeling. If you haven't heard it already, do check out Song Machine Season 1 from Gorillaz.
