Architecture of Maintainance
Mid Jury
Crtic Professor Leonhaed Clemens
When it comes to maintenance work on buildings, the facade is sometimes the
most difficult and costly part. On the one hand, façade systems can often only be
replaced, repaired or cleaned at great expense, and on the other hand, this usually
requires additional equipment such as cranes or scaffolding. Work on the facade is
often risky and can only be carried out by specialists. Besides the facade systems
themselves, the main reason for this is the lack of integration of this aspect into the
architecture itself.
We want to start our journey into maintenance by designing an experimental deep
façade that addresses the issues of maintenance on a technical, social but also
aesthetic level. This means to understand the façade not only as mere envelope that
separates the inner from the outer but as a problem of accessibility, durability, repair
and expression. This raises a number of questions:
Who can access it and how? Is it low maintenance or high maintenance? What
material is the façade made of and how does the façade material behave over time?
How does the façade hold up? Can the façade be more than just an envelope but a
space in itself
