In his early career, he did a lot of street theater. Later, he switched to proscenium. In 2010, he joined 'Theatre Wallay'. He still remains a part of it. In 2021, he helped set up another theater group 'Swaang'. 10 Things My Actors Do That Drive Me Crazy 🎭😂

After years of rehearsals, I’ve collected a few behaviours that every theatre director will recognize.

Props disappear.
Lines mysteriously remain unlearnt.
Five-minute breaks become thirty.
And somehow, every rehearsal can turn into a social gathering. 😑

Anti-migrant sentiment doesn’t just exist between nations—it thrives internally, within our own borders.

Someone should remind Usman Peerzada that Lahore owes its cultural brilliance to figures who arrived from outside its walls: Faiz Ahmed Faiz from Sialkot, Madam Noor Jehan from Kasur, Mustansar Hussain Tarar with his roots in Mandi Bahauddin, Reshma from the sands of Rajasthan, and countless others. Trace the origins of almost any iconic voice, and you will find a small town or village.

If Lahore holds cultural weight today, it is because migrants brought their brilliance here, and Lahore had the grace and ecosystem to let them flourish. If anyone believes the city is in decline, they need to look deeper into systemic issues rather than scapegoating the very people who built its soul.

(This echoes the sentiments of my poem "Lahore Se," written years ago when I first decided to move to Lahore —a story I’ll share another day.)

Last class, we read Saadat Hasan Manto’s original short story Akhri Salute.

This time, we will read the dramatized version.

And there is a reason for doing it in this order.

When a story moves from the page to the stage, something inevitably happens. Narration may become dialogue. Description may become action. Thoughts may need to find a voice. Some things may disappear, while others may emerge that were only hinted at in the original.

So, what changes when we dramatize a story?

Why do we need to dramatize a story or a novel at all?

And perhaps the most interesting question:

What does the dramatized version make us see that the original did not?

I wrote the dramatization of Akhri Salute, so this class will also be an opportunity to look closely at the choices made in adapting Manto’s story for the stage.

We will read both versions, compare them, question them, and explore what happens when literature begins to move towards theatre.

The story was written by Manto.
The dramatization is mine.
The exploration belongs to all of us.

Reading the original short story before exploring its dramatized version is not just about understanding the words. It is about discovering the characters, listening to what remains unsaid, and finding the human soul behind the words.

We’ll explore how the same story changes when it moves from narration to drama, and what happens when a story written for the page comes alive through actors. 🎭

14 August is a day of celebration for us. 🇵🇰

But for many who lived through Partition, especially in Punjab, it also carries memories of loss, migration and bloodshed.

Years ago, I listened to elderly men and women who had migrated from East Punjab to Pakistan. Their stories stayed with me. Two of those stories are available on my YouTube channel: “Tumhara Kafir Bapu” and “Kulhari.”

Today, on Independence Day, I share these not to reopen old wounds, but to remember the human stories behind our history. These may help us understand why we are the way we are.

Being a Theatre Director in Pakistan, I’ve learned that… 🎭

Apparently:

Everyone is an acting expert.
Theatre tickets are too expensive, but dinner somehow isn’t.
“Next show kab hai?” doesn’t necessarily mean “I’m coming.”
A theatre production doesn’t need a budget.
A play can be ready in three days.
And, of course, who needs a script? “Bas story bata dein… actors khud kar lenge.” 😄

After 25+ years in theatre, I can confirm that directing a play involves slightly more than telling actors where to stand.

But perhaps that’s also what makes theatre so addictive. You start with an idea, a few people, a little money, a lot of uncertainty, and somehow, on opening night, there is a play on stage.
