Big step for women’s rights in Pakistan 🇵🇰
Women in Pakistan can now have their father’s name on their passports, a long-awaited reform that strengthens women’s independent legal identity.
Following directions from the Lahore High Court, the Government of Pakistan has updated the passport system to make this change official.
This reform:
• Recognizes women as independent legal individuals
• Removes long-standing barriers to economic, social, and civil rights
• Improves access to essential services
• Reflects gender-responsive governance in action
The initiative was implemented on the instructions of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, with DG Passports Mustafa Jamal Qazi overseeing the system update, in collaboration with UN Women.
A meaningful reform. A real impact. Progress worth acknowledging. 💚
