Today, the Church invites us to remember the Our Lady of Sorrows, the Blessed Virgin Mary who stood faithfully beside the Cross of her Son. Her sorrow was deep, but her love was deeper. She remained with Jesus in His suffering, even when she could do nothing to take away His pain. Her presence itself became an act of love, faith, and courage.
The Gospel brings us to Calvary. Mary stands near the Cross while Jesus suffers and dies. Seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved, Jesus says, โWoman, behold, your son.โ Then He says to the disciple, โBehold, your mother.โ
At the foot of the Cross, Mary teaches us what it means to remain faithful even when we do not understand Godโs plan. She could not stop the suffering of her Son, but she did not run away from Him. She stayed. She watched. She suffered with Him. Her heart was pierced, just as Simeon had foretold, yet she continued to trust God.
There are moments in our own lives when we feel like we are standing at the foot of a cross. We may experience the pain of losing someone we love, family struggles, broken relationships, financial difficulties, sickness, disappointment, or prayers that seem unanswered. Sometimes, all we can do is remain faithful and place our suffering in Godโs hands.
Mary reminds us that faith does not mean that we will never suffer. Faith means that we do not have to suffer alone.
She shows us how to stay close to Jesus when everything hurts. She teaches us to trust even when we cannot see the purpose behind our pain. And because Jesus gave Mary to the beloved disciple as a mother, we can also turn to her with confidence, knowing that a motherโs heart understands the pain of her children.
The sorrow of Mary was not the end of her story. Beyond the Cross came the Resurrection. In the same way, our present suffering is never the final chapter when we place our lives in Godโs hands. There is always hope beyond the darkness, healing beyond the wounds, and new life beyond the Cross.
Today, let us bring our deepest sorrows to Jesus through Mary. May we learn from her courage to remain faithful, her humility to trust, and her strength to continue loving even in the midst of pain.
When we find ourselves at the foot of our own crosses, may we remember that Jesus is there. Mary is there. And Godโs love remains with us.
