Trainee : The Onederful Voice of Venie …….Veneranda Mateo

Today is the 3rd Day of our training here @ Dubbing Academy. We are so blessed that our speaker trainor for today is Director Neil Ericson Tolentino, a multi awarded dubbing director/ writer translator of ABS CBN, Artistic Director at Tanghalang Panday Sining. A very jolly teacher and very inspiring director instructor. He taught us the steps on how to translate and rewrite a film or movie and the terms that are used in directing.

To On means to speak
To Off means to fade or shut off
Example : (To On) a character is speaking but not seen on the camera and when the camera pan to the character then off. (To Off)

Overlap -- sapawan in Filipino
Simultaneous --sabay sabay na pagsasalita
When the director says:
Stretch mean deliver the line slowly or longer
Tighten means deliver lines fast or omit some words, or make it short.

How to translate and rewrite?
Literally put the words into the mouth of dubbers, contextual not literal. The correct choice of
Words proves how good a writer you are.

1)Correct translation and syncing
2)Deeper understanding
3)Comprehension is very important in rewriting
4)Experience is very important - Learn new Language and culture.
5)Syllable counting does not apply to Chinese, Japanese and other Asian languages.

Hindi pwede umarte kung walang script. Choose the right words sa buka ng bibig plus their culture. Translate their wordings according to their culture plus the target audience.

Later in our workshop we were given a movie Danger Danger to translate/rewrite . Each were given assigned pages to translate . At the end of the day we were assigned to dub the page that was assigned to us.

It was a funfilled training but full of new learnings. Thank you Direk Neil Tolentino for your warm and wholehearted sharing of your knowledge. God Bless you more . Morning Session

Today I learned from The Father of Philippine Dubbers, Dir Ama Danny Mandia the following.

Three Types of Modulations

Lower Register - most used in a play, low modulated voice , matured in characteristic . He said
If you know your lower register hindi ka makikilala ng mga kakilala mo at ibang tao

Middle Register - is the normal speaking voice.

Upper Register - head tone, voices becomes younger. You can be any young character.

The pacing of voices is the TEMPO. The CHARACTER STUDY is used to interpret your acting
It is also important the CLARITY in delivering the lines specially the A) enunciation and B) Intonation
Where it must not be a sing song pattern. We must know the loudness when projecting our voice.
Scream without shouting. Know if the PLOT is Comedy Tragic or Drama, the BIDA KONTRABIDA , EXTRA or SUPPORT CHARACTERS. Learn to IDENTIFY THE VOICE of the character in the story, TIME and SPACE in acting, including the LANGUAGE and TEXT of the script.

Afternoon Session Workshop

During the afternoon session we were assigned BR group and I was assigned to BR4 Name KwatroKantos with Group leader Kristel Crisostomo assistant Melina Nomananap Nay Lin Members Marzo Santiago, Enrico Pascual, Joshua Soriano, Marcel Santiago, Maureen Kay Zamora, Veneranda Mateo. BR Secretariat AJ Caloza BR Mentor Dir. Reymar Pena, .

We interpreted the script of Direc Ama Danny Mandia titled “ KULAY ROSAS ANG FINK “ there are two kinds of interpretation
1. Human or Natural Voice 2. Animae or Animated Version. Direc Danny did not encouraged INTERNALIZATION in dubbing because it might affect the person and cannot release the feeling and it will affect the flow of the script. He said be natural, mahirap mag shift ng feeling.

Dir. Reymar Pena advised us

Learn your character
Breath first before executing to voice act
Be aggressive, think like its a comedy variety show
Retain the character.

KULAY ROSAS ANG FINK is a political satire with 3 Yaya as the main cast who are employed to politicians. They talk about their life and experiences inside their employers house . I got the role of Yaya 1 and I was excited to interpret her role who makes comment about their employers. I hope I gave justice to my role.

There”s no words to describe the feelings of learning how to dub the professional way from the experts themselves as our mentors none other than The Father of Dubbers , The First Dubbing Director of the Philippines Sir Danny Mandia, with Dir Neil Tolentino, Dir Allan Ortega, Dir Pinky Rebucas and Mam Nikie Esmero.

I learned that being a dubber means continuous learning, always reading is a must and a great discipline .To become a successful dubber someone must love what he/she is doing whole heart and soul and not only with their mouth. There must be a burning passion inside otherwise he/she can’t perform well the action thru voice.

MGA DAPAT MATUTUNAN NG ISANG TUNAY NA DUBBER.
1 Huwag matakot sumubok
2 Masaya sa kanyang ginagawa
3 Marunong makinig, kaya malapit ang utak sa tenga .
4 Ito ay dapat seryosohin. Hindi ito barkadahan lamang
5 Kailangan may alam ka kahit 3 boses para sa 3 characters
Ex: Nanay Anak or Kapatid
