He was tempted by desire.
He was young. Passionate. Impulsive.
Francis was not born a saint.
He was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Assisi. He loved fine clothes. He loved music. He loved admiration. He dreamed of knighthood and glory.
And like many young men with money and freedom, he knew temptation well.
The world was loud. His blood was warm. Desire did not politely knock — it demanded.
After his dramatic conversion, Francis renounced his wealth. He embraced poverty. He began to rebuild broken chapels and pray for hours in silence.
But conversion did not erase his humanity.
One winter night, alone in his small cell, he was overwhelmed by violent temptations of lust. The memories were vivid. The urges felt unbearable. His body rebelled against his soul.
He did not negotiate with the temptation.
He did not entertain it.
He ran outside.
The night was freezing. Snow covered the ground. Francis threw himself into it — rolling in the icy drifts until the shock numbed his senses.
Then he did something strange.
He shaped the snow into little figures.
“This is my wife,” he said, forming one.
“These are my children.”
Seven snow figures stood in the cold.
“If you want these,” he told himself, “you must provide for them. Dress them. Feed them. Care for them.”
The absurdity struck him.
“I have chosen Lady Poverty,” he said. “Christ is enough.”
The temptation broke.
Francis returned to his cell soaked and trembling — but free.
This was not the last battle. Temptation returned in different seasons, as it does for every human heart. But Francis learned that holiness is not the absence of struggle.
It is the decision, again and again, to love something greater.
Over time, grace strengthened what discipline began. His heart, once restless for pleasure and praise, became restless only for God.
The man who once chased earthly glory would eventually bear the wounds of Christ Himself.
St. Francis of Assisi teaches us: Temptation is not defeat. The battle itself can become the birthplace of purity.
If you feel the fire of desire…
If your body feels stronger than your will…
If you think saints never struggled…
Remember the young man in the snow.
Holiness is not born in comfort. It is forged in surrender.
St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
