Eskinita Art Gallery

Eskinita Art Gallery Eskinita Art Gallery is an artist-run gallery in Tanauan, Batangas.

Established in 2017, Eskinita Art Gallery brings about a contemporary platform for intervention within an art scene that continues to grow, evolve and complicate. Eskinita, as an artist-run gallery, hopes to engage the community with curatorial and collaborative programs that will encourage inspired creativity among artists of different backgrounds. At Eskinita, exchanges and discussions are regul

arly set up within and outside the gallery setting. The Tuklas (Discovery) Program of Eskinita highlights a mentorship and grants program for the continuing development and guidance of young and promising artists, awarding them with sponsored shows, including a residency program at its new Eskinita Art Farm in Tanauan, Batangas. Eskinita, a space for inclusivity and openness, creates projects that survey the increasing diversity of approaches by artists of different generations and origins. While engaging with the 'here and now' in contemporary art, Eskinita also looks ahead to developments that will shape the future of artmaking.

Against the stateโ€™s prescribed aesthetic triad, Katotohanan, Kabutihan, Kagandahan, which underpinned much of official cultural production, Kaisahan emerged as a loose formation of young artists committed to another register of truth. Their work turned toward the social surface of their time, revealing the uneven textures of labor, displacement, and state violence rendered visible through image-making.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the first Kaisahan group exhibition in 1976, Eskinita Art Farm presents Katotohanan, Kabuluhan, Kasalukuyan. Together, Tuklas mentor Renato Habulan, himself a member of Kaisahan, and Alfredo Esquillo, mentored by Habulan in the 1990s, join several Tuklas awardees in revisiting this shared lineage. The exhibition title echoes Kaisahanโ€™s inaugural show, an effort in the 1970s to bring into gallery spaces images of peasants and workers, and the lived conditions of the masses under the Martial Law regime.

TalaAnyo is a collective of seven artist-run initiatives from across the Philippines.

This marks the collectiveโ€™s first museum exhibition as a group in the Philippines, bringing together works and archival materials that trace five decades of collaborative artistic practice (1976โ€“2026), reflecting on shared approaches to collective art making across generations.

Highlighting its seven member initiatives founded between 2005 and 2022, it features collaborative and community-engaged pieces by the initiatives and their founders:
โ€ข Renato Habulan (Agos Studio)
โ€ข Alfredo Esquillo Jr. (Eskinita Art Farm, Tanauan, Batangas)

โ€ข Leslie de Chavez (Project Space Pilipinas, Lucban, Quezon)

The exhibition also brings together selected works and archival material from earlier artist collectives, including Kaisahan, Tambisan sa Sining, Artista ng Bayan, Pamilya Pintura, Salingpusa, Sanggawa, Sakay, among others.

Turning Point is an exploration of a world in transition. From the symbiotic trifecta of the sociopolitical, the cultural, and the deeply personal, the works of Esquillo, Sulit, and Lock weave together narratives that discuss the transformational nature that a society undergoes as it advances towards a new world. And just as seasons surrender to renewal and old narratives give light to fresh perspectives, we inevitably become the decision-makers that steer the course of this ever-recurring wave of reformative change.

In Ang Nagpapalamon ang Siyang Nilalamon, Edmar Colmo paints the face as a phantasmagorial site of accumulation. Within its tormenting form, a hierarchy of images unfolds. At the base lies a poor family while clowns dressed in government official suits lie on the top of the head. This work reveals a predatory structure in which power does not merely govern but also feeds, as it sustains itself through the selfless devourment of those positioned below it. -Words by Dave Lock
