Coconut oil is the fat extracted from the meat of mature coconuts. Two common types:
- *Virgin/cold-pressed*: lightly processed, keeps coconut aroma and more antioxidants.
- *Refined*: neutral taste, higher smoke point (≈400–450°F / 200–230°C).
*What’s in it:* mostly saturated fats (∼80–90%), mainly medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) like lauric acid (∼45–50%), plus caprylic and capric acids.
*Potential benefits (evidence is mixed):*
- *Quick energy & metabolism*: MCTs are digested faster and sent to the liver for energy; may give a small boost to satiety and calorie burn.
- *Cooking stability*: high saturated fat makes it stable at medium heat; good for sautéing/baking.
- *Skin & hair*: works as an occlusive moisturizer; antimicrobial properties (lauric acid) can help with dryness, minor irritation, and frizz; popular as makeup remover or hair mask.
- *Oral health*: used for “oil pulling” to reduce bacteria and freshen breath (don’t replace brushing/flossing).
*Caveats:* raises LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in many people—use in moderation. 1–2 tbsp/day is common if you’re using it. Choose virgin for flavor/nutrients, refined for high-heat cooking.
