Fourth of July is Francisco Dagohoy Day! By Republic Act 11444, the entire Province of Bohol commemorates with a special working holiday the legacy of courage and patriotism of Francisco “Dagohoy” Sendrijas (c. 1724) who led the longest revolution in the Philippines against the Spanish colonial government. Dagohoy, a cabeza de barangay from Inabanga, and his followers initiated the rebellion on July 4, 1744. For 85 years, even beyond Dagohoy’s death, the heroic movement continued until August 31, 1829.

Dagohoy, whose nom de guerre was a contraction of the words Dagon (talisman) and Hoyohoy (breeze) meaning “Talisman of the Breeze,” was believed to have mystical powers to appear and disappear like the breeze. He established the First Bohol Republic in the mountains and caves of Danao with roughly 3, 000 Boholanos on December 20, 1745. The independent government grew into a stronghold of more than 20,000 people lasting 20 Spanish governors-general in the span of eight decades.
Dagohoy was believed to have passed away before 1829 due to old age and sickness in Talibon. May his legacy live on among us.

Today, we commemorate in a solemn Wreath-laying Ceremony as we honor Francisco Dagohoy's unwavering courage and his relentless pursuit of freedom for our people.

We are honored to have Provincial Governor, Gov. Erico Aris Aumentado, Vice Governor VG Dionisio Victor A. Balite Ph.D, PCOL Lorenzo Alfeche Batuan, Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan - Bohol, Philippine National Police - Bohol, and all of the organizing staff of Provincial Government of Bohol - CCAD Bohol/PGSO Bohol and Camp Francisco Dagohoy.
