𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

In the study, Linking Social Infrastructure and Social Capital: Barangay Halls and Basketball Courts as Cornerstones of Community Resilience, Mr. Andrew A. Siguan of the College of Arts and Sciences sought to advance Sustainable Development Goals 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, 13: Climate Action, 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

His study revealed that "everyday community spaces, particularly barangay halls and basketball courts, function as critical social infrastructure that strengthens disaster preparedness, response, and recovery by mobilizing bonding, bridging, and linking social capital." This offers practical insights for local leaders and policymakers in Tacloban City to build "inclusive, multi-functional spaces" that can "enhance long-term community resilience especially in low-resource and disaster-prone settings".

Co-authored by Lauren Hocking, Aaron Opdyke, and Daniel P. Aldrich, the study is published in a Scopus-indexed journal, International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, and can be accessed for free.
