Simon Perez’s Symphony of Confidence and Courage
“Do not be afraid to try.”
Simon, a proud Normalista currently pursuing Bachelor of Physical Education, and was It’s Showtime Tawag ng Tanghalan Weekly Finalist 2024, has always carried music in his heart. From singing in elementary school with DVDs and CDs lovingly brought home by his mother, to stepping on stage as a college performer, his journey has been defined by a deep love for the art of performance.
When auditions opened for the Leyte Normal University Performing Arts Group, hesitation was never an option. On the very first day of auditions, he faced Dr. Jay Mabini and Dr. Romyr Gabon with determination, securing his place in one of the university’s most respected groups. Now, as a fourth-year intern, he admits to missing the stage and hopes to perform once more before graduation.
Behind every performance lies discipline and ritual. Simon practices consistently, sometimes scrambling to find his earphones to rehearse the melody. Vocal warm-ups become his playful yet serious preparation. And before stepping on stage, he prays for strength and composure. “Despite the nerves, I remind myself that I am a performer, capable of nailing the performance.”
Being part of the Performing Arts Group has shaped Simon in profound ways. Confidence replaced shyness, discipline grew through rehearsals, and teamwork became second nature. “We perform not just as individuals but as one family,” he says, expressing gratitude to his Muzik Harmonie Family and their mentor, Sir Jay. Of course, there were lapses like arriving late or forgetting costumes, but each challenge became part of his growth as a performer.
Simon’s message to aspiring performers is simple yet powerful: “To my fellow Normalistas, do not be afraid to try, magpa audition ngani don’t hesitate. Whatever your talent is - singing, dancing, or acting, go for it. The things you will experience as a performer and as a student will shape you into a stronger, more confident, and more disciplined person.”
For Simon, balancing studies and performances has never been a burden. “I made sure that even if academics kept me busy, I would still find joy in performing,” Simon recalls. Having performed since childhood, he learned to adapt to overlapping responsibilities. “It can be tiring, but when you are passionate about what you do, you find ways to manage both.” Flexibility, he believes, is one of the greatest skills that you develop as a performer.
Simon Perez’s journey reminds us that true artistry lies not only in talent but in passion, discipline, and resilience. From the halls of Leyte Normal University to the national stage of Tawag ng Tanghalan, he continues to inspire fellow Normalistas to embrace their gifts and pursue their dreams. As he balances academics with performance, Simon proves that beyond the spotlight, the lessons of music and teamwork shape not just a performer, but a stronger, more confident individual ready to face the world.
