'Kaya ba yan ng tao!?'

We have heard people speculate that the Inaul of the Bansils is machine-made because the quality is too fine

The Bansils are flattered, because the whole dyeing and weaving process is done only by hand and with handmade tools!

Binalodan (ikat resist dyeing) is done by hand, the threads wrapped on the Sarikan (dyeing frame) without any sketches

For weaving, the family has several Iruwan (pedal looms), made by local carpenters from wood, bamboo, and ropes. It is powered entirely by hand and foot, no electricity needed!

We thank Dra Micah Masbad of Kidapawan City for wearing our Binalodan Inaul!

Dr Micah commissioned a piece featuring 'Paganay,' an original pattern by our weaver Moamar Bansil

'Paganay' has deep Kidapawan connections - Moamar designed it in collaboration with Kidapawan Historian Karlo Antonio Galay David (through Kidapawan of the Past), and it was made as tribute to the Moro civilians who were victims of historical injustice in Kidapawan

It was among the patterns exhibited during last year's Mindanao Art in Davao City (the original now part of the collection of Atty Trixie Cruz Angeles)

Dra Micah wore the Inaul during the wedding of a family friend at the Pintô Art Museum in Antipolo Rizal. She even posed for a photo in front of the works of Kidapawan-born artist Manny Garibay!

She also sent as photos of the piece at the Masbad home in Kidapawan, including ones on the family's old heirloom dining table.

While Kidapawan has a Maguindanaon and Iranun population, it does not have any active Inaul weavers. Through the Bansils' collaboration with sons and daughters of Kidapawan like Karlo Antonio Galay David and Dra Micah Masbad, the town can at least take small part in the gradually growing Inaul weaving scene, laying the groundwork for what is hoped to one day become Kidapawan Inaul!

𝐵𝑎𝑔𝑜 𝑎 𝑇𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎, our sold-out exhibition for Mindanao Art 2025, featured curatorial text in both the Iranun language and in English

The Iranun texts were by Guilalil Macal of Alamada and Al Jhamier Unos Mosaib of Banisilan, while the English was by curator Karlo Antonio Galay David

This is the first time the Iranun language was ever used in a National art event, and the first time it was displayed in SM Lanang. For one of the country's most underrated and obscure languages, this is a significant development.

The Binalodan of the Bansil family is not only giving the weavers a livelihood - it is helping empower Iranun culture and identity!
