If you are outdoors

There is no safe place outdoors during a thunderstorm, but you can take steps to minimize risk.

Move to a safe shelter immediately. This is a sturdy building with electricity or plumbing, or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with the windows rolled up.

-Do not shelter under a tree, as this is the second leading cause of lightning casualties.
-Stay out of open areas, such as fields, parks, playgrounds, beaches, and golf courses.
-Avoid all water bodies, including ponds, lakes, and rivers. If you are on the water in a boat, return to shore immediately.
-Drop all metal objects, such as golf clubs, fishing poles, and bicycles.
Get off high ground, such as hills and mountain ridges.
-Separate from others in your group to minimize the chance of multiple injuries.
-If you are in an open space and can't find shelter, crouch down low to the ground in a ball-like position.
-Tuck your head and cover your ears, keeping minimal contact with the ground. Do not lie flat.

If someone is struck by lightning
A person struck by lightning can be safely handled, as the body does not store an electrical charge.
Call emergency services for emergency medical help.

Check the victim's breathing and pulse. If necessary, administer CPR.
Treat the victim for shock or burns until medical professionals arrive.

MULA 1MDB HANGGANG MAHARLIKA INVESTMENT? CONVICTED FRAUDSTER, UMANOY KONSULTANT NG MAHARLIKA FUND AT MALAPIT KAY ROMUALDEZ?

Isang Swiss-British executive na nahatulan dahil sa paglustay ng mahigit US $1.8 bilyon mula sa kontrobersyal na 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) ang umano’y nakitang muli sa Maynila — bilang konsultant ng Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC), ang ahensiyang nangangasiwa sa Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) ng Pilipinas.

Ayon sa Malaysian investigative portal na Sarawak Report, si Patrick Mahony, dating Chief Investment Officer ng PetroSaudi, ay nagtatrabaho umano sa bansa mula pa noong 2023, nagbibigay-payong legal at tumutulong sa pagbubuo ng “legal frameworks and rules structure” ng Maharlika Fund.

Sinasabing nag-o-operate si Mahony mula sa Alpha Suites sa Makati CBD, na pag-aari ng Ongpin-led Alphaland Corporation, habang nagbibigay rin ng serbisyo sa mga pribadong kliyente.

Nahatulan si Mahony sa Switzerland noong 2024 ng anim na taong pagkakakulong dahil sa fraud, criminal mismanagement, at money laundering matapos mapatunayang sangkot sa pagnanakaw ng higit US $1.8 bilyon mula sa 1MDB.

Sa mga dokumento ng korte, sinabi ng mga Swiss prosecutor na si Mahony at ang kasamahan niyang si Tarek Obaid ay nagkunwaring may backing ng Saudi government ang kanilang kumpanyang PetroSaudi International upang makakuha ng pondo mula sa 1MDB.

“Mahony personally pocketed about US $37 million, while his co-accused Tarek Obaid obtained more than US $805 million,” ayon sa court filings.

Ang 1MDB scandal ang nagbunsod sa pagkakakulong ng dating Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak at nagpasimula ng mga pandaigdigang imbestigasyon sa money laundering sa U.S., Switzerland, at Singapore.

Bagaman nahatulan, malaya pa rin si Mahony habang nakabinbin ang kanyang apela; pinayagan umano siya ng korte sa Switzerland na bumiyahe dahil itinuturing na “not a flight risk.”

Ngunit ayon sa Sarawak Report, inilipat na ni Mahony ang kanyang pamilya sa Maynila at madalas umano’y nakikitang kasama si dating House Speaker Martin Romualdez, na sa ilalim ng kanyang pamumuno ipinasa ang Maharlika Investment Fund Act.

Nagdulot ito ng pangamba sa transparency at integridad ng Maharlika Fund. Matagal nang binabalaan ng mga ekonomista na ang estruktura nito ay vulnerable sa political interference at misuse of public funds — mga isyung minsan nang nagpabagsak sa 1MDB.

Sa unang taon ng operasyon, iniulat ng MIC ang ₱2.68 bilyong kita at kabuuang ₱127.2 bilyong assets hanggang 2024, kabilang ang ₱19.7 bilyong investment sa Synergy Grid & Development Philippines Inc. (SGP) na may bahagi sa NGCP, at isang US $1 bilyong partnership sa Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) para sa agrikultura, digital innovation, at sustainable energy.

Layunin ng Maharlika Fund na pondohan ang mga pambansang proyekto sa infrastructure, enerhiya, at agrikultura — ngunit dahil sa impormasyong ito nagdudulot ng pangamba sa publiko kung paano pinangangasiwaan ang bilyon-bilyong pondong ito.
