A look back at our panel discussion at this year’s edition of Art Fair Philippines.

Moderated by curator-artist and Co-Editor Ricky Francisco, the panel led by Main Editor Christian M. Aguilar, Project Lead and Co-Editor Matthew Lopez, joined with gallerist Silvana Diaz of Galeria Duemila in a public conversation on the forthcoming monograph “Federico Aguilar Alcuaz: Salaysay”. This marked the first time the project was formally presented and discussed in a public forum ahead of its publication in March 2026 by Ateneo University Press.

Our sincere thanks to Art Fair Philippines and its institutional partners, Ateneo Art Gallery and Museum Foundation of the Philippines, for the opportunity to share this work and to reflect on new ways of contextualising the practice and legacy of National Artist for Visual Arts Federico Aguilar Alcuaz.

In this reel, we sit down with our Project Lead and Co-Editor, Mr Matthew Lopez—an independent journalist, art researcher, and author.

Mr. Lopez has written extensively on Philippine art, history, and the world of horology. He previously worked as a researcher at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, helped establish the 2018 Manila Biennale’s curatorial team, and later served as Museum Consultant to Fundación Sansó.

A collector of Filipiniana and fine timepieces, he has contributed to many leading publications both in the Philippines and abroad: Spot.PH, the Manila Bulletin, Mr Porter, and SJX Watches. He is also a member of the Academy of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève—one of only three Filipinos in the institution often likened to the watchmaking world’s Academy Awards.

As Project Lead and Co-Editor of the forthcoming volume “Federico Aguilar Alcuaz: Salaysay”, Mr Lopez takes the lead with regards to the editorial direction. He argues that such a publication is long overdue for the stature of the late National Artist—serving not merely to document a prolific oeuvre, but to affirm Aguilar Alcuaz’s role in both Philippine and international modernism through rigorous, scholarly reference
