From street vendor to Joy
Jenny’s full-circle movie moment

The last movie Jenny Kabigting remembers watching on the big screen before Binisaya was Hello, Love, Goodbye.

That was two years ago.

Jenny is a street vendor from Basak San Nicolas. She isn't a filmmaker, film critic or industry insider. She was simply someone who loved watching movies when she had the chance.

Then the 16th Binisaya changed the trajectory of her relationship with cinema. Jenny was invited to become one of the festival's jurors alongside people from different corners of Cebu's film and everyday communities.

She went from selling on the streets to sitting inside a cinema, watching films and deciding which ones deserved recognition.

And among the films that stayed with her was Dan Sy Lopez's Hello Stranger, which eventually won the Audience Choice Award.

It became one of Jenny's memorable films from the Binisaya lineup.

Then comes the plot twist.

Jenny was asked to step in front of a camera and play Joy, the character made famous by Kathryn Bernardo in Hello, Love, Goodbye.

And she wouldn't be doing it alone.

Playing opposite her was Dan Sy Lopez who took on the character of Alden Richard.

There they were, Jenny and Dan together in front of a RED KOMODO, performing characters from a movie that had once been part of Jenny's life as a moviegoer.

A full-circle moment.

Two years earlier, Jenny had watched Hello, Love, Goodbye from the audience.

At Binisaya, she watched Dan's Hello Stranger.

She remembered it.

The audience remembered it.

The camera was no longer something they simply watched.

It was watching them.

This is what makes the moment distinctly Binisaya.

The festival has always blurred the line between the people who make cinema and the people who watch it.
