“PREAMBLE” is an exhibition that delves into the essence of the Preamble of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Each member of the Kabugtuan Group—comprising Abril Valdemoro, Honey Maglalang, Jessa Balag, JP Lopez, Ledz Taboada, Lorebert Maralita, Luntian Kagubatan, and Marte Goyon—has chosen an Article from the Constitution to explore through their art. This exhibition underscores the enduring significance of the Preamble and the principles that guide the nation.
The 1987 Philippine Constitution reaffirms the Filipino people’s commitment to a just and humane society. The Preamble captures this vision, stating:
“We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution.”
As such, the artworks in the exhibit highlight themes such as equality, justice, freedom, and the common good, inviting viewers to reflect on their role in upholding these ideals. “PREAMBLE” serves as a reminder of the Constitution’s relevance and the ongoing need to strive for a just, humane, and democratic Philippines.

PREAMBLE formally opens this Saturday, June 1, 2024, here at the Altro Mondo Creative Space.

Philippine Art Awards Representing Luzon:
MIGRATORY by Honey C. Maglalang
Deploying charcoal deftly and instinctively, the artist weaves an allegory of migration, evoking scenes of movement and resettlement. Around this evocation is the question of the necessity of moving from place to place, which might mean either displacement or a new sense of belonging. Wistful but compellingly graphic, the dynamic relationship between the details across the work and the vignettes in the narrative seems to create a vortex of reflective but also urgent energy.(Dr.
Patrick D. Flores, PhD).
The Philippine Art Award Exhibit will be on display at the Yuchengco Museum until July 30, 2023, so make sure to come and see all the incredible pieces before they’re gone!

Philippine Art Awards Representing Visayas:
BAGAS by Lorebert M. Comision
A man absorbed in thought is caught in the act of breaking open a coconut by
impaling it on a blade that turns out to be a bayonet, evoking both labor and struggle. Beside this painting are the actual objects being referenced, stark and unerring. Surrounding this ominous and urgent scene are an incandescent sky and traces of the fruits of the earth, as well as the skulls of violence, all desiccated and spectral. (Dr. Patrick D. Flores, PhD)
The Philippine Art Award Exhibit will be on display at the Yuchengco Museum until July 30, 2023, so make sure to come and see all the incredible pieces before they’re gone!
