Diwa ng Kumintang is a dance - music suite that brings to life the cultural soul of Batangas, rooted in the ancient land once known as Kumintang. It traces the journey of a people through time - where dance began as sacred ritual, evolved into expressions of courage and courtship, and blossomed into song that celebrates love, identity, and pride. From the solemn, prayerful movements of Subli (Talumpok) to the heroic legend of Princesa ng Kumintang, from the refined gestures of Kumintang to the joyful melody of Batangueña, the repertoire weaves ritual, history, and artistry into one continuous narrative. Each work reflects the Batangueño spirit - resilient yet tender, disciplined yet poetic. Diwa ng Kumintang is not merely a performance, but a living testament to heritage - where memory moves through the body, music carries identity, and the enduring spirit of Batangas is shared from one generation to the next.

It’s hard to believe that twelve years have passed since I first launched my solo album with the renowned pianist, Dr. Raul Sunico. Today, PHILIPPINE ART SONGS finally finds a new home on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music. This means so much to me, not only because of the memories tied to this album, but also because one of my deepest advocacies has always been to keep our beautiful art songs alive and heard by more people.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to my very thoughtful student, who wishes to remain anonymous, for making this possible. I am also deeply grateful to all my dear friends and sponsors who were instrumental in the making of this album—their generosity and support made this project possible.

I lovingly dedicate this work to my family and to all the Filipino artists who have inspired me and nurtured my love for Kundiman, especially my dearest voice teacher, Professor Gloria Coronel.

I hope you can join me in celebrating and uplifting our music—please take a moment to stream the album and share the beauty of Philippine art songs with others.

To the shining gems of this album:

My heartfelt thanks to Dr. Raul Sunico for so graciously embracing this project. Your artistry and collaboration have made this album truly special, and I feel deeply blessed to have you as my partner at the piano.

My deepest gratitude as well to our National Artist, Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, for the beautiful song “Ang Bilis Naman Dumaan ng Panahon”—a piece from a song cycle he especially composed and dedicated to me. It is an immense honor to make the premiere recording of this work.

To Prof. Agot Espino and the late Mr. Jose Cenizal, I am sincerely grateful for entrusting me with the privilege of recording your masterpieces. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your music with me and with the world. May God return to you countless blessings for the gifts you have given.

To the late Floy Quintos, thank you for so generously granting my request to write the English translations. You remain one of my angels in heaven.

TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY!
