Today, we celebrate one month since the Metropolitan Theater premiere of I Will: The Musical. Let's have one more look at a review, this time from blogger Robert Silverio before we officially embark on our tour starting this November 18, 2022.

"THE FINAL REVIEW FOR "I WILL: THE MUSICAL" THE METROPOLITAN THEATER ADDS MORE GLOSS TO THIS SPECTACULAR PLAY

"Yeah, we knew it. It was a lot more fascinating seeing the wholeness of "I WILL: THE MUSICAL" this time around in simple costumes, smooth make-up, powerful LED screen images, transcending lights and a lot more captivating performances. Still, a writer concluded, what really carried this play with such magnificence and consistency were the actors' great acting skills, and we will delve further on that later.

"We did not notice before how fine the choreography was. The moves, the dances and the music flowed-along so well. Not much of acrobatic steps we hate to see, but graceful sways and elegant style.

"The panoramic viewing angles at the MET provided comfortable watching pleasure. Even you are far-away, the images you see created a profound feeling. MET (The Metropolitan Theater) indeed, added more gloss to the beautiful stage production of this musical play.

"Repeating and praising and raving again the performances of Gerald, Ima, Roeder, Al, Krizza, Hutch, Anton, and the whole cast ensemble, a writer felt, would simply sound monotonous. But once again, we congratulate everyone. Their performances enthralled everyone.

"We heard cries, kilig shrieks, laughters, and mixed emotions from the audience as they all absorbed the many messages hidden from this play. Though a lot may have lingered more on the aspect of the mental depression thing, a writer believed, the musical had the greatest impact on being a DOCTOR. Their great sacrifices and contributions on HUMANITY were the ones to be echoed for in the gates of heaven.
THE one who wrote the songs, is a DOCTOR, too. He also directed the play (Mr. Rommel Ramilo) . And with that, the feelings that could be felt via the melody and the presentation were absolutely accurate.

"With added creativity from Assistant Director Paul Jake Paule, alongside with the efficiency of the production staff, this musical attained its true purpose of delivering a wonderful vision of life and wonder.

"Gerald Santos, by the way, looked so handsome and intense from start to finish. Alongside with his great voice and superb acting WAS a PERSONA. A kind of PERSONA that spelled magic...

And LOVE.

F O R E V E R."

We're only a few days away from the first stop of our tour at the Caloocan Sports Complex on November 18. Let's have a look at this review from Vince Vicentuan of BroadwayWorld Philippines.

""I Will, the Musical" successfully premiered at the iconic Manila Metropolitan Theater stage on October 14, almost a year after it was filmed at the Music Museum and streamed online in 2021. The 2022 live theater event was well-attended--an assurance that the Philippine theater industry is slowly oiling up its rusty gears and can be picking up soon. The musical is based on the inspiring lives of Drs. Willie and Liza Ong, with a focus on Dr. Willie's mental health struggles, familial conflict, and his subsequent rise to being one of the most followed philanthropic doctors on social media."

Mental Health Awareness Message, School Tour

"Staged in October, the musical echoes the United Nation's call for mental health awareness as a global priority. Given its message, the production could not have found a more suitable terra firma than the Manila MET. This art deco cultural facility was once stuck in the quagmire of political and proprietary shackles and impending decay.

"Award-winning stage director Rommel Ramilo's indomitable spirit of writing and directing the original musical, despite the pandemic restrictions, fuels the two-hour show led by local and international theater star Gerald Santos. It was announced at the curtain call that Santos would be essaying again the role of Thuy in the Cameron Mackintosh mega-musical "Miss Saigon" in Denmark next year. The announcement was met with thunderous audience applause.

"Before the curtain opening, in a speech delivered before the eager crowd, Ramilo hopes the musical would inspire a lot of people, especially [the] youth, that no matter how difficult [their] situation was, [they] would overcome. He further wishes that audiences may find faith in God through its message.

"Dr. Ong prologued the gala with a brief recollection of how he struggled through depression and the subsequent bullying of his classmates. It was a reckoning that was complemented by tears and sniffles from the audience when the curtain finally fell at the end of the show.

"To bring the message of hope to a wider audience, Ramilo excitedly announced the plan of a school tour, which may start next month, before Santos' departure for Denmark."

An Improved Retelling, Casting

"The Manila MET live performance proved to be an innovative version with several conspicuous creative changes that significantly improved the overall pace. Ramilo and assistant director Paul Jake Paule, who was taken in after the streamed version, successfully introduced new stage elements while retaining some original cast members, including vocal powerhouse Ima Castro (Dr. Ong's mother).

"Of the new elements, Hutch Perales' character as Dr. Ong's alter-ego is the most inventive and impactful. Between guttural and organic movements, spoken lines and gibberish, Perales provides the cohesive thread, sewing scenes that are in danger, at some points, of tearing at the seams. The musical's dark elements of anxiety and depression have never been this palpably terrifying, albeit occasionally amusing.

"Krizza Neri, who plays Dr. Liza Ong, is another substantial addition. Neri is gifted with dramatic and tonal clarity making the role a strong force to reckon with. Her straightforward and nuanced delivery of lines elevates her Liza to a three-dimensional level, which, if not for her able delivery, would have been relegated to supporting role status. Neri is, without doubt, theater's discovery of the year.

"The casting of Al Gatmaitan as Col. Ouano (Dr. Ong's uncle) is another commendable and wise decision. Gatmaitan's dramatic tenor has transformed the role into a bundle of empathy and relatability. His vocal quality perfectly matches what the part rightfully demands, and one can wonder why such a role is so short. Perhaps Ramilo can give him another song or maybe lengthen his part? With Gatmaitan's sincerity and talent, such a move will never go wrong.

"It's a breeze to see Roeder Camañag perform again in a musical. Camañag (Dr. Ong's father) combines forces with Castro. Camañag's rendition of the 11 o'clock number "Our Father's Love" is heartbreaking and hopeful.

"When Castro sings a number, expect her to bring the house down. Her thunderous voice ripping through all four walls of the theater could shame many Broadway and West End stars. In the hospital scene where her husband dies, she wails her woes sitting down, belting out monstrous notes after monstrous notes without the slightest hint of falter. Castro is a theater experience entirely on its own.

"On the other hand, Santos' maturity as a performer is one you can happily take home with you. It is no ordinary feat to essay such a vast and demanding role that sees him as a stammering boy and a depression-plagued teen. Here, Santos's pipes and pathos are tested to maximum limits, but he triumphantly comes out of it. His finale number, the title track "I Will"--a beautifully crafted song that encapsulates the musical's theme--is something that will haunt you for days. Based on his gala performance, Santos is more than ready to take on the difficult role of Thuy in a much more challenging foreign language."

Workable Flaws

"While the musical triumphs in its innovative live staging, the book desperately needs sincere and realistic dialogues. The disparity between purely English songs and Taglish dialogues needs some urgent reworking. Some songs in Act 2 need rearranging, while a couple need to go. Too many sad solo numbers bog the storytelling down and can be tedious for the audience to sit through.

"Notwithstanding these somewhat workable flaws, the musical is stronger than ever, and Drs. Willie and Liza Ong's story begs to be told more than ever. Indeed, when told beautifully and sincerely, one's triumph could be a saving grace for many."

"The sky is dark, it will turn bright

The night is here, the day's in sight

The storm is here, there'll soon be light

You feel so wrong, it will be alright."

12/11/2022

With less than a week before the start of our tour, let's look back at another review of the Metropolitan Theater premiere by an acclaimed film director, Romm Burlat.

"The last time I watched a musicale was more than 10 years ago. That was in New York with “Phantom of the Opera” which remains to be my favorite musicale of all time and “Les Miserables”. In the Philippines, if memory serves me right, it was ages ago when I watched some Repertory of the Philippines musicales.
During my childhood days, 6 years old to be exact, I was in the cast of “The Sound of Music”. That was the only one I did. But some four years ago, I did one stage play not a musicale at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

"Last week was a breath of fresh air to have watched the musicale, “I Will” at the Metropolitan Theater through the invitation of its director who is also the librettist. I didn’t expect much because the title of the musicale doesn’t ring a bell for me. But I was obliged because the lead is Gerald Padua Santos Not because he is my friend but because he has already played Thuy in “Miss Saigon”. And next month, he will reprise the same role in the Danish version of the hit musicale. For that reason alone, I travelled from faraway Bulacan just to watch the musicale.

"I did not ask the director about the story because I want to surprise myself as to what this musicale can offer. While I was brushing shoulders and rubbing elbows with my showbiz friends, I saw then Vice Presidential candidate Willie Ong walking around the corridors. I then realized that the musicale is all about his life; what he has been through before getting to the top. Doc Willie had problems with depression in his younger years. With the help of his family, his then girlfriend, Doc Liza and his strong faith in God, he was able to overcome it.

"“I Will” is a revelation of young talents. I even haven’t realized that the young people are interested in theatre these days since most of them are getting crazy about online games which have affected their studies in more ways than one. It was refreshing to see young people singing, dancing and acting in the Rommel Ramilo-directed opera.

"I didn’t see any flaw in the musicale except for the selfie or groufie during Doc Willie’s graduation. Correct me if I’m wrong. There was no selfie yet during the 80s or 90s. Or was there any cellphone with camera during that time?

"There was so much emphasis on fighting depression. Even if it was a musicale, I cried a tear when they mentioned several times about praying, loving yourself and fighting for your purpose. In this life, each and every one of us has his purpose. God gave us talents and blessings but He also gave us challenges and problems. With our will power, we can and should manage both our successes and failures. Our Almighty Father won’t give us something which we have a difficult time finding solutions. There is always a way to solve problems. Remember if there’s a will, there’s a way. If there’s a will, there is
“I Will”.

""I Will” clearly refers to Willie Ong. “I Will” clearly refers to your will power. If others can do it, why can’t you? I would like to add, if there is WILL POWER there is also WON’T POWER. You can always say No to anything that doesn’t help you live a better life. You can always shy away with things and situations which you think will only destroy your existence. At the end, with the help of Doc Liza who was his inspiration, Doc Willie Ong was able to survive the odds. He finished his medicine with flying colors. His mission since then was to give free treatment to poor people especially in the outskirts.

"With 10 as the highest, I will give this musicale a 9.5. It was almost perfect for me or shall I say near-perfect? The performers were all excellent but three really carved a niche in my mind. Of course, Gerard Santos is tops. Acting-wise, he is a shoo-in for Best Actor in A Musicale (paging Aliw Awards). His singing voice is perfect for any musicale. His dancing skills are passable but his acting is the one that leaves a mark after leaving the theatre. Ima Castro is just simply amazing. Her acting and singing are of international quality. An award is in the offing. And the guy who played depression or temptation (or was it?) He was a perfect choice for the role. His voice, his movements, his facial expressions, I couldn’t see any reason why I shouldn’t give him a two thumbs up. And the rest did just very well. It was an ensemble acting/singing/performing. The lights were just perfect for the opera. There was a little problem with the sound but was immediately corrected. Production Design is best. The props and the outfit of the performers fit them to a T.
I take my hats off to the director/librettist. Kudos to you Direk Rommel Ramilo. You are just a genius. I couldn’t’ do the job that you have done. Putting everything together is a herculean task but you played David in your fight with Goliath. You won. You succeeded.

"Congratulations to the cast and crew of the musicale, “I Will”. I highly recommend this to everyone. To the entire production, start your journey to the provinces and even on international stage. Many Filipinos and non would love to watch “I Will” for they will."

As we gear up for the return of I Will: The Musical for its tour, let's take a look back on Atty. Ferdie Topacio's review of its premiere at the Metropolitan Theater last October 14.

"MANILA, Philippines — It is to the great credit of director Antonino Rommel Ramilo that he was able to assemble a cast of superlative talents for his latest foray into stage, I Will: The Musical, the biography of well-known vlogger and erstwhile Vice-Presidential candidate Dr. Willie Ong. Led by international stage actor Gerald Santos, best known for playing Thuy in the United Kingdom version of Miss Saigon, the cast and ensemble exhibit such a veritable plethora of talent in singing, dancing and acting that I have seldom witnessed in my decades of going to the stage.

"Coupled with original musical compositions — also by Antonino — that are inventive, innovative and engaging, the play thus becomes, at least, watchable.

"Antonino is an old hand in the direction and production of live entertainment, having several Aliw Awards under his belt. He brings all of his vast experiences to bear in the play, as it starts off in medias res with the protagonist (played by Gerald) shown in the throes of depression. The way this was handled was very deft, as the director makes full use of current technology to open up with a mixed-media experience.

"On stage, depression is represented by a human form in an all-black shroud with a white mask (skillfully and energetically played by veteran character actor Hutch Perales), reminiscent of the representation of Death in Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1958). His acting, and that opening scene itself, plus the haunting song Chaos that echoed on three huge LED video walls on stage, created a deep audio-visual impact.

"Ong’s troubles with his parents (played by former matinee idol Roeder Camañag and old stage personality Ima Santos) who were constantly at odds with each other and who kept badgering him to go into business, his further struggles with depression, the bullying he received from his classmates, and his bouts with his stuttering, are all presented in a non-linear manner that was surprisingly easy to follow. It helped greatly that the writing was taut and the multi-media screen assisted the narrative in a manner that would not have been possible with traditional stage presentations. In all, it is a most modern “millennial” play.

"Gerald, as a movie actor (he starred in two of my films) is competent, but nothing to write home about. It is on stage where he truly shines. Feeding off the energy of a mostly adoring audience, he navigated his character with superlative skill, in both acting and song. He is indeed one of our country’s hidden gems.

"Krizza Neri (as Dr. Liza Ong, Dr. Willie’s wife) handled her song-and-dance numbers very well, making one wonder why she hasn’t gained more recognition. She, however, has a tendency to deliver her lines too fast, but otherwise her lighter take on her role provides functional foil to Gerald’s steady intensity.

"Roeder and Ima were intense and persuasively depicted their roles, likewise handling the singing parts with aplomb. Special mention must be made of the ensemble, composed of 10 men and women of impressive talent, playing multiple roles with ease yet much conviction, and tackling the demanding music adroitly.

"The highlight of the play — for many in the theater — would seem to be the kilig moments during the courtship of Drs. Willie and Liza, where tenderhearted ballads, soppy situations and torrid kissing all combine to make the audience react much like they would, had they been watching the latest romcom offering from one of the major movie studios.

"It is just as well that there is immense talent and musical artistry on display during the play’s premiere, because the narrative is inherently a hard-sell, as far as the theater-going public is concerned. Dr. Ong may have several million followers online, but they are there for the sound medical advice he dispenses liberally, which accounts for his creditable showing during the last national polls. I doubt whether there is much interest in his personal life, his supposedly epic battle with depression and parental conflicts, his hard childhood, if only because this sort of account is generic, to say the least.

"Antonino strives mightily to make it a story that many can relate to, especially as to the issue of mental health, but the highly personalized approach and the overtly religious tone of the dialogue and storytelling, thwart his efforts in that direction. While the play is well-acted, well-written and the songs well-made, it will take some will power for the average theatergoer to watch and stay."
