Promoting Art with a Vision and Intentional Analysis
Artworks for Change aggrandize art twith a vision that seeks to shift or transform the perception of power, privilege and the dynamics associated with justice, equality as well as accountability.

Leeway define ART FOR SOCIAL CHANGE as an art with a vision and an intentional analysis. It is an artistic or creative cultural practice that may operate in traditional or nontraditional mediums, modes, or disciplines. Art with a vision impacts people in many ways. It can:

> Raise consciousness
> Alter how we think about ourselves, our society, or our culture
> Create a vision of a more just world
> Be a tool or strategy for organizing and movement building
> Preserve or reclaim traditional cultural practices using your artistic practice as a form of resistance or empowerment
> Create space for expression and build a sense of community
> Challenge racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, ableism, or other oppressions
> Question mainstream culture and beliefs
> Shift or transform the perception of power and/or privilege and the dynamics associated with justice, equality, and/or accountability
> Value healing justice practices focused on strengthening communities, not just individuals
> Engage and utilize a reciprocal process — where there is teaching and learning simultaneously and the consent for engagement is mutual, as is the benefit for yourself as an artist and the community you are engaging

"Meeting Point" by Fintan Magee

"This work is a portrait of three generations of a Wiradjuri family. Painted on the exterior of Dubbo base hospital, the space acts a meeting point for different family and language groups of the greater Western Plains region. This work explores the role storytelling and dance have in the sharing of cultural knowledge between generations, highlighting the importance of family structures in cultural preservation and identity."

This work was created in collaboration with Di Mcnaboe and Lewis Burns. I thank them for their assistance and knowledge sharing throughout the mural production process.

"Power to the Polls" by Carolyn Suzuki

Carolyn Suzuki's illustrations celebrate joy and diversity in human experience with bright color, playful patterns, animal pals, and a dose of humor. She uses the reach of her art in her activism, supporting female empowerment, human rights, voter engagement, and organizations such as the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, RACES, and the Purple Purse Foundation.

"This poster represents the diverse voices throughout our nation that deserve to be heard"

"We Are More" by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya

“We are more than your Asian sidekick, the confused foreigner, the future doctor, your submissive plaything, the helpless refugee, the dragon lady, the straight A student, the computer hacker, the martial arts master, the spunky girl with dyed hair, the quiet kid, the dependable worker, the Tiger mom.”

Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya’s We Are More public art campaign. An award-winning multidisciplinary artist, Phingbodhipakkiya created the public awareness initiative I Still Believe in Our City to address the rise in anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 crisis as a 2020 artist-in-residence with the NYC Commission on Human Rights.

Vote Your Future (2020) by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya

Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya on Vote Your Future (2020):
“Women, and especially women of color have become incredibly influential voting blocs for our country. In this series, pairs of women stand defiantly, ready to determine their futures amidst a flurry of stars, stripes, and ballots. Around them, verdant life blooms, signifying the change these women of color are bringing to our country by exercising their right to vote.

"As a 14 year resident of New York City, I never dreamed my art would appear in the bright lights of Times Square, a place that people from all over the world journey to experience. We’re living through a moment full of hurt and hardship, but the act of voting can serve as a beacon of hope among a sea of despair. Through this essential right that women and people of color fought so hard for, we can ignite change and create new possibilities.

"Just like our government, our art and culture is shaped by every generation. I am encouraged by the passion of our nation’s youth, and excited for the tens of millions of young people who will be at the ballot box for the first time in 2020. But no matter our age, race, or gender, the responsibility for upholding our democracy falls to us all.”
